🐛 Fix: Account Clearing
If you've looked at an inactive account's profile, you've seen a line telling you when its username becomes available. That date hasn't meant anything for the last few years :(.
The cron job that releases those usernames was broken in 2022, and never repaired. So the date would pass, you'd go to change your username to it, and you'd still get This username is not available.
It has been fixed, and will run SOON! The first pass goes out Tuesday, September 22nd at noon Subeta time, and around 14,600 usernames come free with it.
Accounts marked as deceased never clear, and that hasn't changed. If a name does come off an account, that account gets a free username change when they come back.

I love my UN and I won't be changing it but good luck to those eyeing a name that's special to you!
@nubby idk if the username specifically is whats special to your friend, but if its not, then no need to worry. they dont clear accounts, they just make the username available to other users. when your friend logs back in theyll just have to choose a new username.
i recently came back and was surprised to see my name was available to change to. i changed my name so fast. lol good luck to anyone that wants one of the names gonna be freed. :3
Is there a way to tell when an account was last active if its not displayed on their profile? My friend doesn't have a computer and hasn't for a long time but I know her Subeta account means something to her. I don't want to see it cleared :(
If y'all are all changing your usernames please put your deadusernames on your statuses until I remember the new you or I will be confused for ages, thanks lol
Reminds me of an old friend I miss. Thank you for the deceased users system Keith and co. It reassures me that I will be able to visit her page in years to come.

Yes, if Subeta staff are alerted that a particular user has died, their account (and associated username) are marked as deceased, and that username will not be available for anyone to take, despite the account obviously going inactive.
If you come across a deceased user's account, there will be a banner at the top indicating it as such.

I wanted to change my username for my birthday and a couple I was considering were tied up in the account clearing, excellent timing!! This made my week~! Thank you for your continued work on the site :heart:

:O Good grief, I can't believe there have been that many accounts created even in 22 years! That is an amazing fix (although I'm never ever changing my username :D)
