Gold Accounts are now given out as Items instead of time being added to your account. You can still purchase up to twelve months, and there is an item for each. To get your gold account, you just click on the item in your items, and click Activate Gold Account.
This is to decrease the amount of scamming related to selling GAs.
If you purchase gold accounts via snail mail, you will be given the item, instead of time being added to your account.
Also, if you were waiting for time to be added to your GA (you purchased more months) you will be getting a medal in your items sometime tonight.

I believe you get one medal per month you buy. Like, you buy 12 months GA, you get 12 medals.

Another question, can you break up the medals over months? Like, say you have a 3 month medal, and you know you will be away in 2 months for the entire month, can you break it up and use it at different points, or does it all get used right away whether or not you want a GA for that 2nd month?

It's the same system as the donation presents - it's an item. Then you use it. Instead of gaining another item.. you gain a GA.
