Early in the spring of 2001 an up-and-coming young actor named Heath Ledger sat in the bar of a NYC hotel, talking to an entertainment reporter for EW.com. He had a new new movie coming out, The Knight's Tale and while talking about it he told the reporter that, "'I'm on a journey,'' he said. ''I'm on a walkabout. A lot of people think ambition or success, and they think dollars.... My success is getting underneath that. At the end of the day, that's the only thing you're going to carry with you when you die.''
Sadly, yesterday at the far-too-tender age of 28, Heath Ledger passed away in his New York City apartment, carrying with him a great deal of success in reaching people and touching lives through the honesty and charm of the characters he'd portrayed.
Whether you remember him from his very early days, starring in Roar, or his first big movie, 10 Things I Hate About You,, or perhaps his turn as the iconic Australian Hero Ned Kelly, by the time he delivered his incredible performance as Ennis Del Mar in Brokeback Mountain, you most likely knew that when you went to a Heath Ledger movie you were in for a performance that would be true, vibrant, and full of life. Nominated for an Oscar at the tender age of 26 for his portrayal of a cowboy struggling with his sexuality in Ang Lee's Brokeback Mountain Hollywood insiders had predicted a long career, full of many triumphs for Heath.
Sadly, that promise will be unfulfilled. We won't get to see him go on to discover new roles, won't get to see what new triumphs would be just around the corner for him. His final role, playing The Joker in the The Dark Knight will be a bittersweet experience for his fans: joy that we can see him do what he did best one more time, deep sadness that this will be the last time his grace and spirit light up the silver screen.
Again we will miss what might have been, and mourn for what was lost.
But what we do have is much more depth and variety than many actors achieve in a full lifetime of Hollywood fame. I think Heath would be proud of what he achieved at the end of the day; I hope so, anyway.
RIP, Heath Ledger 1979-2008

Thank you for this, a very touching tribute.

That's really sad...I really liked how he portrayed characters in the movies, especially 10 Things. 28....Damn. He was just too, too young.

I've had Pneumonia and the antibiotics and so forth make you jumpy and an insominiac. It would have been really easy to take too many sleeping pills. Also, they might have worked against him with the other stuff he was on.

Most likely he died from Pneumonia and Exhaustion. Not the pills.
I'm not a person who is usually a fan of celebrities, however Heath Ledger did make an impact on me. His acting was on a whole other level, and the roles that he chose reflected a certain depth that many of today's celebrities will never experience in their acting careers. He will be missed but was deeply appreciated while he was here...may his spirit be at peace...Thank you for the beautiful and poignant tribute.
i know many people may be thinking 'what's the point' with the media being all over this, but take one thing into consideration: he's a twenty-eight year old, he's a father, and he had his whole career ahead of him.

sure, not everyone's a fan of his movies, whether you don't like the roles he played or what they represented. but my heart goes out to his family. i've seen many parents outliving their kids, and they all say it's the worst thing.

he was a heartthrob, we all know that. but i think it's just the shock of the matter that means so much to everybody... sure, we'd expect this from certain "pop princesses" and "drugged out rockstars", but not someone like heath...
And although some may think that why should we mourn a guy that died on a drug overdose, I disagree. If the person was in that state of mind, we should feel sorry for him because there must've been something in his life to make him turn to something like this, they would be sick. Anyway, the police said that it was an accident.
RIP Heath. =]

It doesn't really matter how he died (although there is a strong possibility that it was an accidental overdose, since they were prescription pill) - the point is that he was a young talented person who went from us too soon. It happens all too often, and not just in the celebrity world. We are simply more aware of those celebrities that died in this fashion because of their fame, and the vast numbers of people who are affected by their death.
For those of you complaining about his drug overdose, the police ruled it ACCIDENTAL. He was sick and took the sleeping pills, that were prescribed to him.
What I find wrong is people selling these items for loads of sp on the trades. If you don't want them, don't buy them. Let those who do want them have them...with out having to pay tons and tons for something they will appreciate as more than a money maker.

Thank you. I agree too. It's low enough for the media to try and make money off of a person's death but seriously, how low must you be to sell items dedicated to someone?

As for this death, to my knowledge the autopsy still hasn't been done so no one knows. He wasn't that type to commit suicide IMO though.

nobody knows exactly how he died, yet. It could be suicide, it could be an accidental overdose - It's safe not to assume until we know the facts.
I wasn't a huge fan of Heath's... only because I haven't seen any of his films. But I have been aware for the last few days of how greatly his death has affected so many people. I work at a television station, and yesterday, our noon news focussed almost exclusively on coverage of his life and death. Obviously many people are saddened and upset by Heath's passing. They are entitled to express their grief in any way they want to.

I think this is a lovely tribute, and I commend Keith and Kamil for their effort.

I'll be quite honest, he was a pretty good actor, and cute (for a male). But didn't he commit suicide? He overdosed on sleeping pills right? That's not the kinda thing you accidentally OD on is it? RIP Heath. I may not have seen any of his movies or even known who he was really but it still doesn't mean he wasn't a great actor in the eyes of quiet a large number of people judging by what I've read. he was the actor who connected me and my daughter, the first we could both enjoy in movies and thought was cute as heck. He was a piece of Australia making us proud in movies and showing the most amazing breadth and depth of characterisations in such a broad variety of roles. Such potential.... yet at least he leaves us with a wealth of movies to watch and remember.....

His cause of death has not yet been determined- even if it was an accidental overdose, it doesn't make him any less of a good man. That kind of stuff happens to many people- it is still very sad no matter how one dies.

Please don't talk about Steve Irwin. He's death really affected me a lot. And I mean A LOT! He is really important to me. You're going to make me cry again!

Thank you so much for this tribute, Subeta. (Keith and Kamil in particular)

I broke down into tears the other day at school because of it. He was so young and full of potential and he's leaving behind a 2 year old daughter who will grow up with, at the most, vague memories of him. This is probably even bigger of a tragedy than Steve Irwin's death. At least we knew Steve Irwin died doing something he loved and we almost knew he would die doing something he loved. Heath's death came as a huge shock and just as a movie that would probably put him up there with other extremely big actors was soon to be released.

Once more, Thank you, Subeta. hugs for all

RIP Heath. You'll never be forgotten.
Ive always seen Heath as a heartbreaker type actor. Always in that sweet hero type role. His new movie, the Batman one, is going to destroy that image. He plays a young Joker, I saw a clip.. its CREEPY. He's about to obliterate his sweetheart image. I cant decide wether I want to see it (I really want too!) or keep him as the sweetheart I always thought of him as.

I thought my brother was telling a really bad joke when he came in and told me Heath was dead. It's so sureal and I personally can't get used to it. He's gone .. he was an amazing actor probably inspiring the biggest crush ever. He chose the best roles and played them well. It reminds me too much of River Pheonix.. I'll miss Heath.

I guess it's still sinking in for me.

I remember the first time I saw him act in a film. It was 'A Knight's Tale'. I loved that movie, and I loved Heath Ledger. Since then, I have watched every movie he was in. He did do excellent in 'Brokeback Mountain', and I think he did a good deed through that movie for people in that sort of situation.

Thank you, Heath Ledger. May the stars watch over your spirit, and know that we are sad that you left so soon. bows head solemnly

It's sad, but that's just what happens when you overdose on sleeping pills. >>; Too much drama in the celebrity world.

Thanks Venom, the fact I forgot his name was bugging me! I know that he may have had a different situation, but I'm glad others notice his passing and are saddened by it as well. I mean, I'll admit that the daily lives of celebs don't really catch my attention (and by that, I mean the " we saw so and so here at this time and he was eating this type of sandwich"), but that's totally just me as an individual. Actors can contribute a great thing to the population as a whole, and they will be missed for their contributions just as other people who may not be so famous will also be missed by their family and friends. It's just the fact that both tragedies happened in the span of a few weeks, I feel both should be remembered for what they've done.

Someone said, 'I "contribute negatively" because I go to Subeta to not have anything to do with the real world, and I am annoyed that it even intrudes here...'.

It's amazing how people's reactions differ so much from each other. Sure Subeta is a great distraction from the trouble we face in everyday RL, but I find it praiseworthy that while the Suebta staff do their utmost to provide us with entertainment, they are also aware that we live in a world which isn't always just enteratinment. For me, doing this memorial is a sign of huge maturity on the part of the staff.

I often find myself disagreeing with certain decisions taken on this site, and that's perfectly fine cos I have a right to feel that way, and the owner of this site has the right to take those decisions. But I will say this for you Keith: you've made this place a very tolerant one, and I'm glad that even while playing, I and everyone else can discuss deep real life issues such as the death of someone who most of us feel still had so much to give us all.
That would be Brad Renfro Scy64, he was in The Client and Tom & Huck... I believe a few other low budgets as well. I was saddened by his passing as well, so young

I am very sorry this happened to him- I'm not a huge movie fan, but any untimely passing is always a hard thing to deal with.

I would like to point out that another actor died recently (though his name escapes me right now), from from what I recall was a drug overdose of some sort (the details are fuzzy in my head). I wish something would have been said about him as well. Life is life, no matter who's it is, even if one may be more well known than the other.

RIP to both of these actors, and my thoughts are with their friends and family.

I cannot believe the amount of disrespect some of you are showing. If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say it at all.
Obviously this HUMAN BEING meant something to alot of people, just because you didn't appreciate him doesn't give you the right to criticize a MEMORIAL.
I don't go walking into a funeral for someone I didn't really know and stand up yelling OH WELL GET OVER IT!
Seriously, grow up, have some compassion for life instead of being selfish.
Yes people die everyday but millions of people do not know of every person that passes, Heath was an actor, he was out there for millions of people to connect with. That doesn't make him any more important that anyone else, he is recognized on here because so many people were effected by his passing.
I appreciate the time and effort that has gone into remembering such a great actor and would only hope that someone would care enough to say such good thing about me when I pass.
