Darkmatter Kerubi Revamp!

Maleria is not one to lay idle, even in the warmer months. The revamped darkmatter kerubi is proof of her constant and unsettling work on growing her power!

So to recap: Original - First Revamp - Second Revamp:

Thoughts?

lull

Late to the party ^_^;

Really don't like the revamp though I can see how it is in keeping with how the kerubi is. I guess it's good in one way as there is one less colour combo I want now.
0

Ambition

The original was better in terms of pose.

Ginseng

@Volatile I clarified some of the stuff you mentioned in other news comments already. If you want to continue, feel free to sMail me so we can talk, otherwise I would rather not clog up the news comments anymore.

Idiot

@Rodent ... we didn’t “decide to dogpile you”, since that’d imply a concentrated effort. The reason we all reacted the way we did is because you came across as dismissive and totally against any sort of criticism. Even if you didn’t mean to, that is how you came across. We should use a ticket you say? Why? So that we don’t “publicly shame the artists” or? I mean, I really don’t understand why you took issue with any one since I don’t think anyone was being explicitly rude. And as some have pointed out, you did in fact imply that people shouldn’t be criticizing if they’re not artists. But go off I guess.

@hobi

I... didn't say any of that? I'm not saying the artists are above critique. I'm also not saying that we should simply be happy with whatever they decide to post. I'm not even saying it's mean to provide critical feedback, because there's many times when that's completely necessary! And I also didn't say that those 3 in particular had unreasonable complaints! I even agree with a number of their complaints! Some of the critique of the revamp are completely valid and legitimate! "Some of ya'll" does not mean "every person that has complaints about this revamp." I made my original comment bc some people are actually being overtly rude and critical. But I sure as heck didn't target the 3 that decided to dogpile me.

Ginseng

@czar

People can be educated about art without being artists. "People that don't know anything about art" ≠ "everyone that's not an artist." Again, I wasn't implying what you thought I was.
0

poppy

@Rodent
1. All three people you pinged? Artists. Wonderful, amazing artists. That know their shit.
2. Oh yes, let's clog up the ticket center for people with actual issues because artists can see our constructive criticism in an area meant for User Admin, not Site Artists.

But go off, I guess, on more things you know absolutely nothing about.
We aren't being mean for providing constructive criticism, just because the artists work for Subeta does not put them above any other artist on this site, nor their helpful tips. Professional artists should still always work and strive to improve and take criticism to help them.

Also for reference; The Glacier Telenine was revamped, and then revamped again because Akita (another amazing artist) recommended some changes to make it more proportionate. Users do have a voice on this site.

I would hate to be an artist doing pet revamps, most of ya'll are waaayy too nitpicky or have no idea what you're talking about when it comes to art, lol.”

But go off, I guess lol

Ginseng

@Volatile @czar @Evanesce

I mean, I literally never said you had to be an artist in order to criticize artwork, nor did I imply it, but go off I guess. :) Artists are real people, and they deserve respect for the work they do. If you really feel that it's that terrible and needs fixed, I suggest you be productive about it and submit a ticket or talk to a staff member.

Have a pleasant day. :)
1

METROID

@Evanesce
Perhaps one reason why so many pets are designated to one artist is because there are simply not enough pet artists. A couple of the artists I know do take their time to perfect their work, so when we do see something from them, it's usually wonderfully done. But they can only handle so many pet species at once to avoid burnout.

I can't remember the last time applications for pet artists were even made available, so if there's enough money in the budget for new artists to join, I'd like to see applications open.
5

Evanesce

@Rodent Like 70% of the people complaining are artists, but thanks for the extremely rude assumption and generalization, made you look SUPER good. I can literally see brush strokes on the tail and it's washed out like 90's sugimori watercolor work because it's shaded with VERY PALE COLORS for some god awful reason. I could go on and on about how THIS revamp in particular falls into EXACTLY what we were saying the forums about how we want more focus on pets that REALLY need a revamp and that the quality and output of those revamps has NOT been helped by them being assigned to one person only. Yet again, this revamp proves me right that the system is broken, because this should NEVER have gotten through quality control.

@Morgenstern If it isn't perfect, THEY SHOULDN'T POST IT OR IT'S JUST GONNA NEED ANOTHER REVAMP. Putting out subpar product is part of why the revamps are needed in the first place. I've pushed back release dates for my own art to fix it and that's what should have happened here. If not from the artist, but from their boss.

We don't hate the artists. Some of us have been supporting them since childhood and I even have my own two tentacles mcgee, a Hydrus Harvester, despite the HORRID anatomy and desperate need for a revamp. My disappointment lies solely on the system that fails to do what it was intended to do: quality control and asking for more. Everyone looks at a piece for too long, they can lose perspective or get frustrated, or be determined that that ONE line has to be the one that's working, even if it's not... but Subeta pets are not a one off piece of art where you can afford to do that, they should stand the test of time and have more asked of their artists. Art mistakes happen, but they shouldn't become official art. In the words of Gordon Ramsay, "The standards have to STAY high."

@rodent
You don't need to be a master chef to know when a dish tastes bland and needs more salt, and you don't need to be an artist to know when something is wrong with a piece of art. From what I've seen of the criticisms, most everyone has been generally civil and pointing out problems they see, but they're not being rude or mean about it. Nobody is demanding the artists change how the revamp looks, but it's good to keep note of it for future reference. Critique is meant to be used to improve, and people are allowed to express their disagreements and why they're displeased with something so long as they're not rude or demeaning.

But hey, if you want critique from an 'artist' who 'knows what they're saying', then here's my 2 cents. While overall, I like this revamp, I have to agree that there are some parts that the original had and the revamp lacks. The rather bland expression feels like a loss to me because it doesn't give the revamp much personality compared to the original, and the changed pose with the slight change in color palette makes it feel more like a default color rather than a special color. The shading is gorgeous, and while the anatomy does bother me a little, I can attribute most of it to the limitations of fitting something into a 200x200 box (I would've put the right/farther front leg behind the other front leg so that it would keep the angle of the body that the tail and hindlegs are naturally leading to). If the revamp design had been pushed just a little bit more, I think it would have made a positive difference, but I do like the revamp.
13

Idiot

@Rodent I don’t think you understand the concept that we, as consumers, are allowed to express valid criticisms. As for most being too nitpicky without being artists; at least 5 artists I’ve spoken to, overlay artists included, have expressed differing levels of dissatisfaction with this revamp. Nevermind that even not being an artist doesn’t exclude anyone from being able to make valid observations. The DM Kerubi is average imo, but it’s execution seems lacking in comparison to other pets. Is that a valid observation or am I whining?
11

Jen

I love it :3
1

Lantern

I think it's cute :heart:
1

SuguruGeto

I don't like this revamp :( I mean, the art is much better, and the shading is fantastic, but I don't like the pose, the face, or the colors..
4

Pinocchio

I do like it better than the old one, but I also understand the complaints I'm seeing in the comments. It seems.. different, from the feel of the other Darkmatter pets in personality/expression I think. Nevertheless I want one. xP
1

Fluxism

oh, I didn't realize how much I liked the old one until I saw it here! darn.
2

Chrysariel

Aw I like it. I know they should look more fierce, but I like pretty pets.
1

Ginseng

@Fyn I mean, I'm pretty sure the Creative Director of Subeta is the one that draws the Kerubi, so I'm thinking it's her that gets to decide how a pet color is supposed to look.

¯_(ツ)_/¯
0

Fyn

That said, this is an improvement, art wise, over the old one, but the pose/face and the coloration is terrible.
0

horizon

Its face is too innocent, I feel that dark matter pets should look more fierce but otherwise it's nice.
4

Fyn

@Marlboro It happening before doesn't mean it's okay. It means they need to fix the Chelon as well.

Darkmatter and Twilight should not look the same with simple orbs attacked to Darkmatter. Darkmatter should also look malicious to some degree, which this one does not. (The old one did).
7

Fray

this really isn't that great
2

Stocking

Going after the coloring is totally nitpicking lol the pose/expression having like no real emotion compared to the original is more noticeable than anything else imo.
2

Ying

I think the art is an improvement.

The twilight/dm is a bit inevitable, but overall I do find the colouration to be a bit light.

Which artist does the Kerubi? I'd love to get a no darkmatter of this to play with for an overlay. :)
1

Marlboro

It's not the first time and I don't see a problem with it, the revamp is beautiful
5

beinagrind

@Morgenstern

It's because the twilight kerubi is also purple based. Twilight isn't just black/blue, some are black/blue/purple, some are just black/purple.
4

Morgenstern

I...don't understand the people saying it's twilight. Twilight is a dark blue and black, while darkmatter is a dark purple and black. It's always been that way and that is the color scheme of this darkmatter pet. But maybe people don't have the best screens or color perception or something. The nitpicking people are doing is so unbelievably minor I don't understand it at all. I don't know anyone that has done a drawing and it turning out to be the epitome of perfection. I think it looks great and is a huge improvement from the original. Amazing work.
3

beinagrind

I like it overall. Shading and anatomy is 100% better than the old one, though i agree the attitude and colour choice was better on the old one. The headwings perceived uneveness i think is because the far one's feathers are fanned out and the near one's aren't.
2

Solas

I don't see a problem with the new revamp, it makes me want to hug the poor guy, because he looks nervous. or scared to have the darkmatter near him :o *what the heck, I'll hug him anyways*
4

Ginseng

I would hate to be an artist doing pet revamps, most of ya'll are waaayy too nitpicky or have no idea what you're talking about when it comes to art, lol.
9

Pish

Hoo boy... Saw the post title and immediately got nervous, knowing either the revamp was going to be just an update of lines/shading or.... this. :c I mean, the overall quality of the revamp is good! The bab is cute! But, like others have pointed out, the twilight-esque colors, small anatomy errors, and the new pose are making this a pass for me. I won't be changing my sweet Nebbykins, though - he's been a DM kerubi for what, ten years? and any other species would just feel wrong for him. Ironically he was twilight before that, so it's come full circle with the new color palette haha!!
3

god

i actually love the expression; it might not look threatening or miffed like the old one/other dark matter pets, but it definitely looks less like a 'proper' kerubi and more vaguely afraid. fits the theme of corruption well imo, just like the dm kumos. but i'll agree that the pose and colouring isn't as interesting or dynamic as it probably should be.
2

omg_carrie

(whoops, I take back the comment about it looking "perky" - just looked at it on another screen and I can see its expression better now, and it's definitely not perky XD guess this screen is darker than I thought. I still prefer the old expression, though.)
1

omg_carrie

Hmmm, not sure how to feel about this. It's really cute and I like it, but it really doesn't feel like Darkmatter to me, it just looks like a fancy Twilight, if that makes sense. It looks a bit too perky for a DM pet, I preferred the expression on the old one tbh.

Also agree that the black stripes looked better. Purple stripes make it look waaaayy too similar to Twilight. If this had black stripes and the old expression, it'd be gold. As it is I feel it misses the mark a bit.
4

Lea

* i also kind of wish it had

i... wish we could edit comments lol
2

Lea

I also kind of it had kept the same colors as the old one; it really does look similar to the twilight, and I'm not really fond of the way the purple looks against the main body color because there's not a lot of contrast, though that might be my screen really... There are a couple of nitpicky little things that other people have mentioned, but the art quality is much better here!
2

Fyn

Honestly, my only issue with the new version is that the stripes are purple rather than black like the original.

With the purple stripes, it looks WAY too similar to the Twilight Kerubi.
1

Ginseng

@Zay That did it, thank you! :)
0

nobody

I NEED IT. but for who? aaaa!
0

Zay

@Rodent
Have you tried clearing your cache or hard refreshing the page with f5? The new one is still there for me.
1

Ginseng

Did they role the revamp back already? I don't see the revamped version in the news article, I see the old one still.
1

Quaint

I usually prefer the revamped version of pets, but the old one had a better pose and colors.
1

Damon

Very nice revamp!
0

Zay

Aww I really like it. I never really considered a Kerubi before, but this revamp might have changed that haha. Just have to see in the future as I've no pet slots right now.
1

Mad

I have to agree with most, it's actually Twilight in color and the expression on the old one was more of a dark-matter expression. Oh well, guess it's here to stay. The old one wasn't even bad enough to need a revamp. So many other pets are desperate for one it seems...
10

Thia

I think it looks great for the most part, and I think people are being way too nitpicky about it. The only thing that bothers me is the wings--one is larger than the other, which I noticed immediately, and the wing anatomy could use improvement...although I assume they're just decorative since there's no way something could fly with those, so I guess the anatomy isn't really that important anyway.

I always felt like the darkmatter Kerubi should have demon-like wings, like the bloodred and nightmare ones, but with that new expression I guess that wouldn't fit so well anymore.

And the colors...yeah it really just looks almost exactly like the twilight Kerubi now. I feel like someone should have made sure that the new colors don't look too similar to any of the others.
1

Bliss

@Ponyo
We're not hard to please...

I can't speak for anyone else (but I see a lot of comments regarding the same issues on this revamp).

Now, personally speaking, I'm not a fan of this revamp because a lot of things are just not matching to Kerubi in general.
5

Ashei

If it kept the annoyed expression and the black stripes/spots, I think I'd like the revamp a lot more- it otherwise looks pretty good! I was sad to see my DM Kerubi's expression change so much after so many years, and... yeah, the dark grey + purple combo is way too similar to the Twilight Kerubi. :c
5

Kestrel

I can understand why people who own one might be disappointed over the change in expression, but I like the new one so much better. There's a lot of DM pets that look annoyed or sinister even though there doesn't seem to be a standard expression for the color. I like that this Kerubi looks worried and almost.. tired. It's a different feel from most pet poses/colors that we have and opens up more possibilities.

I do agree though, it'd be nice if it was little bit lighter.
2

piers

Yeah tbh this one isn’t my favorite. I’ll never be able to unsee how alike it is to the color of the Twilight one, and I definitely miss the generally pissed off and genuinely disgruntled look of the old one. And where are the spots beside the stripes on the tail? I’m always excited to see pet related content being released, but this time, I’m pretty disappointed. The shading is a great improvement and the artist did a wonderful job, but this is definitely not my favorite revamp.
6

KiaArra

I'm looking at my twilight Kerubi now, and noting how awfully similar the colouring is.
12

KiaArra

It's tail doesn't look fluffy enough, and agree that it could be a few stages lighter, but I think overall it looks nice.
DM ontra next pls?
0

Selene

The dark matter kerubi was one of my first dream pets and I am very happy to see this revamp! I love it so much ;o;
0

Bliss

I like the pose of the new revamp; however, I'm not a fan of a few things:

- The ears look wonky at the tips
- I don't like how dark it became
- The glow isn't as strong as it used to be
- The tail thinned out

Also... I really liked the face on the old version. This one looks.. too happy to be a dark pet.
5

Faizh

Much better than that old and cell shaded art. Absolutely lovely and modern.
0

Xia

Everything is adorable expect the ear tips... both ears are not equal. Left ear tip should flip down to matched as right ear or an older art's ears were better. Add a bit more glow on tail, shoulder and arm if you already left a teeny tiny glow... then add more or take them out. Add black eye inner corners.
6

MarchOnOff

Love it, by far better :heart:
1

innamoramento

I like the revamp. It looks darker in a way? makes me want to get one... but why was the pose changed? Sigh...
I understand that breathing fresh air into stuff sometimes means changing a lot of stuff.... but when it comes to subeta art.... most of us want better lines, better texture and shading, and not really making an entirely new art for the item.
considering i wasnt inclined to get the old DM Kerubi, but i like the new one.... the artist had a good inspiration. to the disappointment of many users....
4

Pirate

I like it HOWEVER I don't really understand why staff keeps changing the overall personality while revamping a Pet. Many of us users choose our Pets carefully and with a reason...
29

Thespian

ahhh i appreciate the artist's work!! but i really don't like this revamp at all ; ___ ; the markings don't stand out against the fur at all, and while i like the pose, i don't think there was anything wrong with the old one to warrant changing. i really like the two angry looking dark matter balls though, those are a neat touch! :' D
16

Tali

I'm torn. I do like the revamp, but at the same time, I miss the personality of the previous version.
5

Yoshi

I'm not a fan of this revamp, the biggest thing is that the personality is entirely different now. The old kerubi looked annoyed, and this revamped pet has an entirely different feel. I'm able to see brush strokes around the tail markings that are present (1 - 4), and echoing that the spot markings that go around the tail stripes are nonexistent as well.
17

Faber

I like this revamp! So cute :)
2

Loki_826

Adorable, although it looks apprehensive in expression and body language. I feel like it needs some reassurance. *HUGS IT* ❤
3

Nuke

Aaaa awesome now Dain can have a fitting color!!
1

Kirby

@Evanesce
You sure are hard to please.. ?
0

Sprinter137

@Evanesce
I agree...I have a DM Kerubi and I'm not entirely happy with this. The anatomy and coloring/shading are wonky. The purple stripes kinda just blend in unnoticed, they looked better when they were black. I like the new face better though ^^. Maybe it's just something I need to get used to, I've had my Kerubi for a loooong time
10

Ashei

The shading is definitely improved, but I liked the expression and colours of the old one more. ;__; Gonna have to find a new colour/species combo for my old Luxxa.
10

Maniac

i kind of forgot this color existed
nice to see an update for it, it's definitely a big improvement
1

Evanesce

... The headwings are so uneven I can't unsee it - the back is larger AND higher on the head - and one of the most important parts of the design, the spots on the tail among the stripes, are totally non-existent? I'm not usually so negative about revamps but this one needs FIXING.
14

Tinkerbabe

@Jasper Thanks for showing the original version. It is a wonderful revamp! I am looking forward to the release of their Blob version! :D
1

Viking

Oh, how adorable. And finally another Kerubi besides Chibi that I like. (:

Apologies for the low quality, I didn't notice it at first. Here's a cleaner version of the original:
