Hi all! It's been a few days since the Big Move, so I thought I'd post a little status update. I wanted to address some things that might be on people's minds (cough lag), and talk about where we go from here.
So yeah, the lag issue. I've heard a few people say that they wish we'd stayed on the old servers, since the site seems slower on the new servers. While this may be true, it's by no means the whole picture.
We didn't move to make the site faster, at all. We moved because the old servers were actually causing our database to become corrupt and eventually crash the site entirely, at which point the site was down until we could recover the database. Sometimes even our real-time backup was corrupt, which led to much-hated rollbacks.
Obviously, something had to change, and so we moved off of the old servers and onto our new ones, which so far (crosses fingers) seem rock solid. Our database has been taking much more punishment than it was ever capable of handling before, and it's handling it with grace, not locking up or crashing or anything. A HUGE improvement!
On the other hand, things do seem slower... that much is the truth. Why? It could be for any number of reasons... not least of which is the fact that we started an event immediately upon moving here. Also, servers are not simple boxes that you plug in and turn on. They have more configuration options (think buttons and knobs and dials) than you could imagine. Getting the settings right for these servers might take some time.
But by far the biggest point is this: now that we're free of servers that crash and corrupt the database, we can begin to address Subeta's performance issues in earnest. These problems are rooted in the programming, and that, I can fix :)

Oh good, I thought the lag was due to my computer/internet being a bitch.
Thanks for the update guys! We know not everything will be perfect but that you're doing the best you can <3.

Thanks for letting us what's going on! I was curious about the lag, and it's good to see that it will be addressed in time. I'd rather have a little lag that can be fixed rather than a corrupted DB that may lead to rollbacks or something like that!

I love this site <img src="http://images.subeta.net/smilies/6398_emoticon_raspberry.gif" border="0" />
It appears to be run by real people!

I rather play slow subeta then no subeta!
Go Alex and Keith!
and as mentioned earlier , we <img src="http://images.subeta.net/smilies/6398_emoticon_heart.gif" border="0" /> you

This just makes me giddy with joy. I must tell you. XD You rock my socks with your improvements! Thank you!

I'm so glad the sability of the site has improved so much. That's great to hear. As far as lag goes, honestly the site is running faster for me, so I have nothing to complain about. At all. As per usual, thank-you for working so hard for us <img src="http://images.subeta.net/smilies/6398_emoticon_heart.gif" border="0" />

I wouldn't know if the site was lagging or not, with this old dinosaur laughingly called a computer lol I am happy just to have this place to escape to - you are all doing a fantastic job - no complaints from me
I must say that I have not seen any more lag on these new servers than I have on the old servers. They both lag horribly for me. It is nice to see, however, that there are no more crashes, though we've had some down time, which is understandable when moving to a new server or performing maintenance. As for the lag being programming related, that's good to hear, actually...it means there is hope! Thank you, Keith, and all the staff for working so hard to get things fixed up and running smoothly!
I never complained and am not complaining now. I think you are all doing a great job considering how much work there is to do. Yes, I hate the lag, but I know it's not forever, so good job yet again!

Thanks for the news. I love all of you that you do what you do. You give us the chance to play a wonderful game and meet new people and even through this make new friends. Sure the site lagging isn't a pleasure but honestly: We play this game for free, you don't make us to pay, it's all voluntary. But the best is: No downtimes! I would rather wait five minutes for a site to load than sit here and see that Sql for hours XD If some would but have more patience they would see that you guys are working your butt off for us. And for that I thank you!<img src="http://images.subeta.net/smilies/6398_emoticon_heart.gif" border="0" /> And for that you are in my heart. I can live with the lag, even though I haven't noticed it much XD Just something I had to say and it's very early for me here (around 7 in the morning yawn), so my brain is not even as awake as I want it to be.
Have great day and thanks again for being there for us :] <img src="http://images.subeta.net/smilies/6398_emoticon_heart.gif" border="0" />

I'm glad that we are now on a saver server. But it's true, the old lag problem when there are more than 500 people on line had come back again, (the more people, slower the site). In the past you solved that problem, so I guess you'll be able to solve it again.
Love you guys.
gives you food and drinks to keep you sharp
hugs
No rush. I know you guys will fix it. <img src="http://images.subeta.net/smilies/6398_emoticon_wink.gif" border="0" />

I just wanted to take a second and say Thanks for explaining.
Oh man, all those buttons. I know what that is like. My class actually went to see the big server databases at my college one time and it was big and noisy, and picky about heat and dust.

What fantastic news! Thank you so much for the update. Also thanks for explaining it so that computer-fail people, like me, can understand.

I love the

I appreciate what you all do for us so much. I can only imagine how difficult making a site as popular as Subeta must be and you're doing an amazing job!
And anyways, Lag or not, I don't know what I'd do without Subeta.

Thanks for working so hard to keep things running smooth, dude. However, whoever decided to launch the Reading Drive RIGHT after a move needs to be smacked around a bit. Way to go, genius. Epic Fail.
thanks alx. i think the site is going a bit faster at the moment. not lagging as much. hope it continues.l
Go Alex! <img src="http://images.subeta.net/smilies/6398_emoticon_smile.gif" border="0" />

Keep up the good work Mr Alex! I'm just so glad that's you're letting us know... you've seen the problems and you're working on them <img src="http://images.subeta.net/smilies/6398_emoticon_smile.gif" border="0" /> That's good enough for me.

On a side note: couldn't the event have waited a few days? Until things were stable? It's not fun to do anything at this point...just annoying and frustrating.

Thank you for the update Alx. I think most of us who are griping just wanted some sort of acknowledgment that ya'll realized there was an issue and some sort of reassurance that it wouldn't be like this forever. I do appreciate that the site is not crashing and also that you are working on the lag issues. Thank you! <img src="http://images.subeta.net/smilies/6398_emoticon_smile.gif" border="0" />
Thanks Alex I Think You All Are Doing A Great Job And I Am Just Glad Subeta Is Running.. Yeah It Maybe A Little Slower But As You Said It's A Lot Better In Other Ways.. Thanks For Keeping Us Informed And For Doing Such An Outstanding Job!! Kudos! To The Whole Subeta Team For All Your Hard Work And Dedication To This Site!! You All ROCK!!
It's like the difference between your slow, practical and kind uncle, and your crazy crack-addicted grandpa. You love them both, they're family, but the uncle's going to last longer. <img src="http://images.subeta.net/smilies/6398_emoticon_wink.gif" border="0" />

Thanks Alex & Keith! hugs Great work!!!! <img src="http://images.subeta.net/smilies/6398_emoticon_heart.gif" border="0" />

Alex, you're a doll! I only noticed the lag at the book nook and figured the event was the problem. Some people get their knickers is such a twist over the smallest things. I can't wait till people have a REAL crisis to deal with....

Shame on you Alex for the lag XD No I'm just kidding <img src="http://images.subeta.net/smilies/6398_emoticon_raspberry.gif" border="0" /> the lagging is a bit annoying but i can deal with that for awhile and I much prefer that to site crashes for hours at a time and if you can fix it eventually and tune it just right that's awesome and worth the wait <img src="http://images.subeta.net/smilies/6398_emoticon_smile.gif" border="0" /> thanks for the hard work and updates as always. <img src="http://images.subeta.net/smilies/6398_emoticon_smile.gif" border="0" />
Thanks so much for the update! I know I really appreciate knowing what's going on. And the lag bothers me much less than having the site go down. XD Good luck with fixing the coding! <img src="http://images.subeta.net/smilies/6398_emoticon_smile.gif" border="0" />
Thanks for the information on what is going on. Much appreciated and if the site is a bit slower at times but is no longer crashing, etc. then I just don´t see how anybody can complain. The new event with loads of people all trying to clear out their vaults and then donate the books during pretty much the same hours for a few days is bound to make things slow down - not too hard to figure out. Thanks for the update and also the efforts to make the site better.
Alex, I know that people say this enough, but thank you for all that you do. <img src="http://images.subeta.net/smilies/6398_emoticon_happy.gif" border="0" />
Good luck!
Good luck!
Thank for all of the hard work ♥
Glad to know the servers are running smooth so far, besides the minor lag issue (:
Glad to know the servers are running smooth so far, besides the minor lag issue (:
I'm not saying the RD is the cause of the lag, just that we won't really be able to compare the new servers to the old speed-wise until the event is over <img src="http://images.subeta.net/smilies/6398_emoticon_smile.gif" border="0" />
no problems, guys <img src="http://images.subeta.net/smilies/6398_emoticon_happy.gif" border="0" />

Thanks for keeping us informed Alex! And the lag is better than the entire database crashing, so it's all good. <img src="http://images.subeta.net/smilies/6398_emoticon_happy.gif" border="0" />

I knew the RD was a cause of the lag xD I don't really mind it, and I'd take lags over crashes any day! Love you guys, thanks for making Subeta an awesome place <img src="http://images.subeta.net/smilies/6398_emoticon_grin.gif" border="0" />
