Hi all! It's been a few days since the Big Move, so I thought I'd post a little status update. I wanted to address some things that might be on people's minds (cough lag), and talk about where we go from here.
So yeah, the lag issue. I've heard a few people say that they wish we'd stayed on the old servers, since the site seems slower on the new servers. While this may be true, it's by no means the whole picture.
We didn't move to make the site faster, at all. We moved because the old servers were actually causing our database to become corrupt and eventually crash the site entirely, at which point the site was down until we could recover the database. Sometimes even our real-time backup was corrupt, which led to much-hated rollbacks.
Obviously, something had to change, and so we moved off of the old servers and onto our new ones, which so far (crosses fingers) seem rock solid. Our database has been taking much more punishment than it was ever capable of handling before, and it's handling it with grace, not locking up or crashing or anything. A HUGE improvement!
On the other hand, things do seem slower... that much is the truth. Why? It could be for any number of reasons... not least of which is the fact that we started an event immediately upon moving here. Also, servers are not simple boxes that you plug in and turn on. They have more configuration options (think buttons and knobs and dials) than you could imagine. Getting the settings right for these servers might take some time.
But by far the biggest point is this: now that we're free of servers that crash and corrupt the database, we can begin to address Subeta's performance issues in earnest. These problems are rooted in the programming, and that, I can fix :)

Thank you for all of your hard work, Alex. We adore you for all the time you put in and for taking all of the pings we send you. May you not have to go sql hunting anytime soon. Anyone else would've probably snapped on us many times from the "ALX KILL YOUR SQLS" comments....You're awesome!

Good to know!
Thanks, as always, for the update and informational post. Lag hasn't seemed too bad for me, and I'm glad the move seems good thus far!

Oh, I know Alex and like I said I have total faith in your amazing abilities. Believe me, more positive changes have come about since you have come on board in the years I have played this site.

I like that. Thanks for the update. Anything is better than rollbacks.

Lag >>>>> Rollbacks and Crashes.
I lovelovelove the way the site runs now. Lag once in a while is to be expected, especially with so many members on for the book drive O_O I'm waiting to see if the site runs better without the event - I have faith in everybody working on the site =3
LOVE YOU ALL. <3<3<3

Kal, I'd much rather tune them while the site is at a really high load The first day of the event we hit user counts in the 1,000s and everything was running smoothly (though a tad laggy), so I'm really confident in the new system... just needs tweaking and optimizing.

ty so much for all the hard work you put into this. Its just a matter of time like you said till you figure out how to fix the lag. That is so much better than crashing and all the headaches you had to do with. Thanks again for all the hard work you put into this thankless job have a great day/night
Lag is MUCHMUCHMUCH better than rollbacks any day! I don't really mind the lag either.
I also love that you keep us updated on whats going on with the site instead of keeping us in the dark. THankyou so much for that c:

Thankies MUCHLY for the heads-up. Cleared up some questions I had. -is comp illiterate-
I just hope that the issue of not being able to donate books gets fixed before the RC is over. BUT I have FAITH in you.
I am fine with the lag. I believe that is isn't such a big deal. ^^ I would rather be on subeta with a lag than not be able to go on sometimes or not at all. TT3TT
GL and thanks for a fun site to come on. <33333

I just wish that the servers could have been tested without an event, but I have faith in your and other staff members' dedication to fixing this site. Thank you.
Thanks for the update It's nice to know what the hell is going on behind the scenes too
understands all of this... that is why i am patiently working with the site the way it is.. i know it will be super and has been very rock solid since the move...
Wahoo!!! I don't care if it lags!!! The site has less down time and that makes me happy.
o_0 Odd enough, blank messages make you think twice.
Me likey.

I never even noticed a difference.XD Shows how much I pay attention.
I had noticed that Subeta seemed to be very slow for me, but I thought it was my computer. Ah well, I'd rather have kick-ass servers than a bullet speed site.
