Nothtri
(nahth-tree)

Nothtri was born into a family of swordsmiths. Every day as a hatchling, he would watch his parents forge and hammer the blades of battle that everyone in forest city wanted so much. The swords they made were famous for being high-quality weapons that never failed their owners. It was expected that, when he was old enough, Nothtri would take over the family business and continue making them.

Often, a little Endeavor by the name of Surako would visit to watch, too. And when their parents shooed them out, they would play, chasing each other around (Nothtri usually won), hiding, and "sparring" with long sticks. This would usually end when it would get dark, and his parents would charge him with "escorting" (whatever that meant) her home, or when a very angry relative would drag her back while glaring at him.

As he got older, Nothtri picked up on some things as he gained more experience on how the world (or at least, the city in the forest) worked. While out and about, delivering the finished blades to his parents' clients, he noticed that the Endeavors, the higher-class members, didn't really like him, or other Illumi, who they referred to as "bugs". They treated them as lower beings, and this puzzled Nothtri, because Surako never treated him or his parents in such a way.

Another thing he noticed when he was older was that things were starting to change between him and Surako. She came much less often now during the day, and when she did, he would find her staring at him as he made swords under the watchful eyes of his parents. Why she would be staring at him, he had no idea, but he sometimes found himself staring at her, too, and she was so beautiful! And then he would tell himself to stop slacking off and get back to work. While she hardly came during the day, she came more often at night, and they would just talk about things. Surako seemed very unhappy about things at home, it seemed. Sometimes, when she left, she would leave things behind, and wouldn't take them back when he tried to give them back to her later. He once told his parents about this, and they just smiled at each other, puzzling him further.

More time passed. A matured Nothtri took over the business, with his aged parents helping him out. Surako never came during the day anymore, coming entirely at night now. Nothtri found himself greatly enjoying and anticipating these visits. They would just sit under the stars, speaking softly of both mundane and profound things, finding themselves inching closer and closer together until their hands touched...

They came to realized that they loved each other, and wished to spend the rest of their lives together. Unfortunately, reality would not agree with this dream, and they both knew it - while Nothtri's parents were perfectly happy with them becoming life-mates, Surako's parents weren't, and the fact that she had to keep sneaking out at night was evidence of that. Nothtri tried not to let it keep him down, but sometimes he had problems keeping his heartache away, and would stop working to rest for a while; the biggest thing his parents taught him about the making of swords was that he had to put all of his love and energy into making them. He knew that he couldn't work at full concentration or strength while he was depressed like that.

After a while, a letter came from Surako, asking him to come to her home. Nothtri thought about what to do for some time, then strapped four swords onto him and set off for the other side of the city. Upon reaching the gate, he showed the guards the letter and was let in. His eyes were dazzled; the cavern's ceiling seemed as high as the sky, almost, sparkling gems were embedded in the walls, the glowing ones providing light, and fierce statues of what might be Surako's long-dead relatives seemed to snarl at him as he passed. He didn't let this display of wealth and prestige distract him, however; Surako and who appeared to be her parents and a brother were waiting for him close by.

Surako's father almost seemed to sneer as Nothtri approached. He seemed to have been the same pale color as his daughter was in his earlier years, but darkened to a grey as he got older, making him seem more like one of the statues Nothtri passed earlier. Her mother, more of a pale blue, didn't seem to like him much either; like Surako's father, she also looked down upon him like he was some sort of disgusting thing. Her brother, a dark blue, seemed to be completely uninterested and distant, perhaps in deep thought. Surako was the only one that showed any kind of warmth.

Surako's father asked if he was truly the bug that Surako "had been so obsessed with". Nothtri responded that, yes, he was the one who wanted to be Surako's life-mate, and bowed, trying to make himself appear as small and lesser as possible; in the corner of his eye, he could see one of Surako's hands clench into a fist. After a small snort, the Endeavor continued, pacing back and forth, saying that his daughter was of very high breeding, and, as Nothtri could imagine, he was not so keen on having a bug like him becoming her mate, especially since he had already promised her hand to another high-class Endeavor of a prestigious family. He stopped pacing and glared directly at Nothtri, saying with great loathing that, despite this, his daughter had convinced him to give him one iota of a chance at her hand. In Nothtri's heart, a weak ray of hope started shining.

It was easy, the Endeavor said, all he had to do was pass a test, and, don't worry, it was perfectly suited to his profession. He stopped and snapped his claws, and an Illumis emerged with a scroll and handed it to Nothtri, who unfurled it as the servant rapidly disappeared in the shadows as quickly as it came. As he read it, he found himself becoming more shocked and angry with each line his eyes finished. Surako's father wanted him to forge a sword that was as long as Surako's wingspan and as wide as her body, but still possess a cutting edge and, most importantly, still be wielded by Surako as a viable weapon, which, of course, meant that she had to be able to lift and swing it. When he was finished, he looked up and noticed that her father had a poisonous smile on his face. Nothtri caught one last glimpse of Surako before her father ordered the guards to escort him out.

Nothtri had no idea how to go about making such a blade. Its length alone meant that it would be heavy and unwieldy, not even taking into account its width, which made it even heavier, and the problem with having a sword so long was that it would have to be thicker than usual so that it wouldn't break or bend upon hitting something, which meant that it would be much harder to get a cutting edge on it. Still, despite the problems he had with the design, he had to do it, especially since he knew that her father made the conditions virtually impossible on purpose. He will not be denied!

Making the actual sword was much harder. Every day, Nothtri exerted all of his energy into making it, as if he was in a zealous fever. Many days passed, and Nothtri often feared that Surako and her family thought that he had given up, though the fact that they kept sending someone to check on his progress was something that went against that notion. Thus, after weeks of non-stop work, an exhausted Nothtri was ready to present to Surako's family the massive blade he had made for them.

The sword too heavy and too large for Nothtri to carry by himself, so he enlisted the help of a few members of his clientele to help carry it across town. He knew that it would be virtually impossible for Surako to wield it, but he knew that he had to show up with it, which would've been better than giving up and claiming that it was impossible to do. He was ready for whatever humiliation Surako's family would give him. Despite this, something in his heart told him that it would go well. When they entered Surako's awe-inducing cavern, he could see the triumphant look on her father's face.

They set it down in front the Endeavors. The blade itself was jet-black and shiny enough to have a reflection, and the pommel had two long, braided tassels trailing from it. Though it was beautiful, what mattered was if Surako could wield it. Her father, with a cruel smile, gestured for her to come forward and try it. She glared at him as she approached the sword, but her gaze softened when she turned to Nothtri before putting both hands on the grip. Instantly, the blade glowed as though it was lit from within by the sun, and an extremely shocked Nothtri had to cover his eyes until the light subsided enough. What he saw shocked him even more: the blade, which still faintly glowed with a whitish light, was milky white and slightly transparent, with elaborate designs etched upon its flat face. The best part, though, was the fact that Surako was pointing it at him with a grin on her face. She lowered the blade and turned to her father, saying that it was "as light as a feather".

Her father had a look of complete shock on his face. Bugs didn't have any magic, he stammered. He demanded how Nothtri did it, but the Illumis was just as confused as he was, simply replying that he did what he always did. Upon being asked just what that was, Nothtri said that he "put all of his love and energy into it" while he was making it. Her father especially focused on the word "energy", and he snorted, before insisting that he see the blade. He placed a hand on it, and seemed to be looking at it intently, before dropping it and looking at Nothtri both irritably and wearily. Earth-magic, he said, is one of the most subtle types of magic there is, and a type that few Endeavors are born with and that few take the time to learn because of its subtlety, as opposed to the more "theatrical" types, like fire or water. He looked at Surako, and said that not even she knew Earth-magic like that. Nothtri could see a spreading smile on Surako's face, though he had no idea what her father was talking about.

Surako, with an almost malicious grin on her face, asked her father if he was trying to say that Nothtri had magic. Her father practically spat that yes, Nothtri did, and since she held him to his word, she could be with him. Nothtri still had no idea what they were talking about, but was more focused on the fact that her father had just given them permission to be together. His heart raced madly in his chest, and he felt as if he was floating.

And so Nothtri and Surako were finally able to be with each other. After bringing some things from her room and offering to carry the giant sword, they headed home. Nothtri continued with sword-smithing, and Surako started a business for magical services, such as casting spells on homes to make them fireproof. Today, they still do this, though they now have a daughter named Yumigami that they adopted after finding her egg in the deep forest.
