My Story

Nice day we’re having, don’t you think? I happen to think everyday is a nice day now I’ve found my new home.

I’ve always wanted a home, you see. Nothing too fancy —I’m a simple scootle after all. Just someplace quiet and cozy to spend my days. I thought I had found just that when I first left Riverside, but then I wasn’t even given a proper name before I was thrown into the rift.

It was… scary, in there. And it made me scary. It was awful. When I finally got out I had no idea what to do. There was no one else around and the Galaxan Wastes were so unlike anything I was used to.

I was lost, alone, and very, very far from anything I’d call a home.

Eventually I was found, but when no one showed up to claim me, I was put up for adoption. I thought I would be there forever. Riftborns aren’t as cute and cuddly as some of the other colours, and people thought I would be mean, or tough, but I’m really quite friendly!

And then one day, it happened. I can remember it like it was yesterday...

It was warm and sunny; a perfect summer day. I was thinking about going outside when Norik came in. They were looking for anyone, anywhere, who had any advice at all on getting a xotl to sleep. It took them a while to ask the question because said xotl was trying to climb onto their face. The kennel cleaner at the time couldn’t offer much in the way of suggestions.

“Sing to him,” I said. They turned around and blinked at me.

“Sing?”

Judging by what I could see of their face, they didn’t like that idea.

“Any song will do.” And to prove it, I hummed a simple tune. Sure enough, the xotl climbed down and settled into the crook of their arm. Immediately they look of relieved.

“Thank you.”

I was happy to help and didn’t think much of it. Norik went back to talking to the cleaner and I to daydreaming about taking a dip in a nice, refreshing pond. When they approached me later, I figured it was just to say thank you again since their little xotl was still fast asleep.

“I was thinking… I have this whole big habitat set up for him that he doesn’t use — figures.” They said it with a fond smile and gave his back a little scratch. “But maybe… you would like it?”

I couldn’t believe it. After all that time, I was finally being adopted!

“Of course you’d have to put up with trouble here… and me, but if you end up not liking it, we could look into fostering or something. There’s options, anyway, as long as you don’t mind singing this one to sleep every once in a while.”

I knew there had to be a catch, but I didn’t think it would be something so nice. It had to be something else.

“Is he going to jump on my face?”

“Oh yeah definitely for sure. Just the other day he jumped right into a harvester’s hood. Took me twenty minutes to get him to leave. Honestly at this point I’d be surprised if he didn’t.”

It wasn’t long before we were headed on our way. Norik told me a bit about themselves and how they ended up with Sticky Tick. I told them about Riverside and how I ended up in the Rift. I tried not to dwell on it and sour the day, but they could tell I wasn’t happy about it.

“Common potions are pretty cheap, and I’ve got some money saved up from doing the odd job here and there. We could pick one up if you want.”

It was such a generous gift on top of everything else, I couldn’t possibly have accepted. But Norik wasn’t deterred.

“How about a job then? The agency is on the way, and besides, if he can keep a job, you certainly can.”

The perfect solution! And as luck would have it, there was an opening at the food market. It was hard work, but every bit saved brought me one step closer to looking like myself again.

When the day finally arrived, I could hardly contain my excitement. I was even up before Sticky Tick, and on the way to the apothecary I kept zooming ahead, only to have to double back. Norik didn’t seem to mind, but when we finally arrive, they had me wait outside.

“You know the saying, ‘Bovyne in a potion shop’? I think trouble here would take that as a challen—”

He’d jumped on their face.

They plucked him off and put him on the ground beside me. “Would you mind keeping an eye on him? I won’t be long.”

I know they were only gone a few minutes, but it felt like an eternity, and the journey home felt like it took even longer.

“Now I know you’d saved up for a common potion…”

Instantly my heart sank. Did I not have enough saved up? Where they sold out? Discontinued?

“… but there was something there that I thought would suit you much better.”

The flask they set in front of me was full of a swirling, golden-orange liquid. And the result? Well…

They were absolutely right. This is the perfect colour for me.
