This was the day.
They all knew it, yet they said nothing to my face about it.
Merely smiling at my jitters and helping me clean my feathers.
I was young to them, in comparison to their eons of service I was a fledgling.
They smiled at me with kind eyes, none of them patronizing. They were not capable of being patronizing.
They were gentle. I was bursting inside, my soul soaring within my chest. For this was the day I was allowed to visit Earth.

I had heard stories, snatches of stories, about the surface we guarded and the inhabitants, but noting definite and nothing constant.
Some said it was sad, some said it was glorious; others refused to speak of their visit and requested never to be sent below again.
I was understandably nervous. A human would be nervous when asked to visit heaven, after all.
It was odd thinking about seeing the world below, the people I worked hard to protect and guide by my little actions. I was hardly a guardian, merely an assistant to one, but I still cared about the creatures below. The idea of seeing them finally after all these years was enough to make me giddy.

I was led to the large pool at the center of it all, the golden liquid at the center was clear. I could see the marble base at the bottom. It was covered with carvings in every language known to our kind, and presumably the humans as well.
My mentor, an aged angel who had served as a guardian since the beginning of humanity itself, tapped the water with his hand. It began to thicken, swirling in a circle until it began to hum. I looked to my mentor, hesitating. He smiled, nodding at me and nudging me forwards. I walked into the center, closed my eyes, and let the energy surround me.

I was greeted by a lesser light than the one I had been engulfed by. It was warm, friendly, and welcoming. I blinked as long green tendrils scented like lights breath tickled my face. I sat up, running my hand through them in awe. They were like baby hands reaching up from the surface of this marvelous place to greet me. I laughed.

“Why this must be grass!” I said, giggling to myself.
I looked up at the light blue surface above me, dotted by white and gray clouds that were moving along at a quick pace. Little colored heads rose from the grass around me, bowing in the wind. They looked like the flowers we kept in heaven, but more fragile and fleeting. This added to their appeal for some reason.
I pushed myself to my feet and took a moment to look at myself.
I was clad in an odd outfit, something I would describe now a as a sundress, and my feet were bare. I wiggled my toes deep in the turf and let out a shout, running through the grass as fast as I could.

In my hurry, I startled three little furred creatures from their hiding places. They scattered quickly, and I stopped moving.
They stopped as soon as I did, moving closer to me as if sensing that I was different.
The smallest of them all, a tiny gray-blue long eared being I now know to be a bunny rabbit, approached me and sniffed my leg. I laughed, as his little nose tickled me, a sensation I had never felt before. It tilted its head at me before running to join its friends.

I walked along towards a tall tree in the center of the field, only to be fronted by a sensation of shocking cold. I stumbled back, looking down to find the source of this change. I touched the small pile of white cautiously, letting it rest on my fingers for a moment. It melted and ran away as tiny drops of water.
“Snow?” I questioned. I had heard rumors of this substance covering the world in the harshest season known to humans. Yet this tiny inoffensive pile of powder was harmless. I picked up a small amount more of it, moving it through my fingers and laughing before walking to the tree and sitting down under it.
I breathed in the air, letting the sappy smell fill me. I leaned against the trunk, closing my eyes and sighing.

So this was Earth.
I had a feeling I would never want to leave.
If the humans were as beautiful and kind as their planet, I would have no problem protecting them.
After all, what kind of creature could possibly be evil in a place like this?
