Hi all! Okay, so I believe (and never before have I so hoped I'm right!) that I've had a breakthrough with the server config. For the first time, our database servers seems to actually be using a significant part of it's muscle.

So tell me in comments here: is the site fast for you? Or does it still leave something to be desired (and even if so, is it better than before?)

June 18, 2009

Oh, dear. You see? This is what happens when we overload the artists with too many "What about the [insert not-yet-released pet color combination here]??" comments!

NOTE: The scribble ruffie, chai, and malticorn are revamps. The manchu and Experiment #1536 are new additions to the scribble roster!

June 17, 2009
Hi all! It's been a few days since the Big Move, so I thought I'd post a little status update. I wanted to address some things that might be on people's minds (cough lag), and talk about where we go from here.

So yeah, the lag issue. I've heard a few people say that they wish we'd stayed on the old servers, since the site seems slower on the new servers. While this may be true, it's by no means the whole picture.

We didn't move to make the site faster, at all. We moved because the old servers were actually causing our database to become corrupt and eventually crash the site entirely, at which point the site was down until we could recover the database. Sometimes even our real-time backup was corrupt, which led to much-hated rollbacks.

Obviously, something had to change, and so we moved off of the old servers and onto our new ones, which so far (crosses fingers) seem rock solid. Our database has been taking much more punishment than it was ever capable of handling before, and it's handling it with grace, not locking up or crashing or anything. A HUGE improvement!

On the other hand, things do seem slower... that much is the truth. Why? It could be for any number of reasons... not least of which is the fact that we started an event immediately upon moving here. Also, servers are not simple boxes that you plug in and turn on. They have more configuration options (think buttons and knobs and dials) than you could imagine. Getting the settings right for these servers might take some time.

But by far the biggest point is this: now that we're free of servers that crash and corrupt the database, we can begin to address Subeta's performance issues in earnest. These problems are rooted in the programming, and that, I can fix :)

Welcome to Subeta on our new servers!

Congrats! If you're seeing this message, you are definitely on our new servers and return to playing normally! Enjoy!
Hello all!

In case you missed the last few posts, we've been in the process of moving the site to new servers. That process is coming to a close, and it's time to make the final switch.

Subeta will go down soon, and when it comes back up we'll be on the new servers.

During this time, you may see yourself transferred to a site called move.subeta.net . This is merely a way of getting around the 48 hours that it takes for DNS to spread across the internet.

Some of you may have been playing on move.subeta.net if you've been following the progress on Twitter or IRC. From this point forward, changes on move.subeta.net may be permanent, so don't give away your whole inventory or you may end up very, very sad :)

If all goes well, you won't even be logged out :)

Wish us luck!

Hi everyone! In case you missed the news post the other day, we are moving to new web hosting (yay for greener pastures!). We got access to the new servers today and everything seems to be in order, so I've begun the rather complicated procedure of moving Subeta to its new home!

I'm going to be doing as much of the move "on-line", with the site on, as is possible. I really have no idea how this is going to effect the site though, so we will see. I'd much rather turn it off for the day than have trades and item transfers and purchases go screwy. I have disabled the web server that will be hardest hit by this, so hopefully that will help some.

If you'd like to follow our progress, I will be keeping everyone up to date on the Subeta twitter, so tune in!

Thanks for your patience, and wish us luck,

Alex

Your mother always warned you not to eat too many sweets as a child. You just couldn't listen, could you? She told you about the way your teeth would rot and you just chuckled and went about your merry way, stuffing your gleeful face with the delectable sugars and candies. You laughed at her stories about ... about the Evil Pie.

Until one day the Evil Pie showed up. Until it showed up and ... and ...

... we don't talk about that.

And now you sit up at night, flinching at every sound, crying out every time something round and flakey-crusted and delicious moves in the corner of your eye. You haven't eaten sugar in weeks, but it just keeps following you. You see it everywhere now. It's even infiltrated your stickers, your beanbags and the cookies you shakingly buy for your wizened, bitter old mother, now ...

Aww, chibi wyllops have been given an update. Wouldn't you love to take one home?

Hi all! For those of you who don't know me, I'm Alex, Subeta programmer. This news post is kind of a big announcement, but it's also a long one, so bear with me. I promise, it's worth it.

It's always amazed me that Subeta's problems with crashes and downtime have become something of a running joke on the site, but I can see why they have. Back when this year started, we were suffering from database crashes every couple of days, sometimes going down for an hour or two before we were able to recover, sometimes much longer. And we had a couple times where we had no choice but to roll the site back for hours (or days) when backups didn't work or corruption was too bad.

Keith and I have been hard at work fixing this situation though. And things have gotten much better. The database now stays up for days without crashes or killer lag, and when we do crash it takes us, on average, less than 45 minutes to get back online with no rollbacks.

But still our core problem remains: both of our database servers somehow have their data corrupted, overwritten with nonsense, which eventually causes us to crash and have to restore from another copy. This has been a vexing problem for us, and it was one of my main focuses when I attended the MySQL User's Conference back in April. And I'm happy to say we now have a very solid theory of what's happening. The details are pretty technical, but the general theory is that the Solid State Disks (SSDs) that our database servers use, and the RAID cards they are connected to, are somehow corrupting the database. This is actually more likely than it sounds, because the disks our hosting company uses in our servers, we've discovered, are a cheaper brand of SSDs meant for things like storing your music on, not running high-concurrency, high-churn databases on.

So we're moving... to a different hosting company, one that has put together a much better setup for us. Our servers will have more memory, faster disks, no RAID cards (which end up slowing the SSDs down), and better support for when things go wrong. The new setup is currently being inspected by the new company, after which WE get to inspect it (likely tomorrow) and then we'll move the site. Even if it doesn't fix the corruption issue (which we are almost positive it will), this move represents a pretty nice improvement for us.

So, what should you expect? Downtime should be contained. I'm actually hoping to only have the site offline for a few minutes, but it may take longer than that. When copying gigabytes of data across the internet, you never really know how much time you'll need. The site will NOT be changing names again, we'll still be subeta.net.

With any luck, when Subeta comes up it will hopefully be much more stable and (crosses fingers) noticably faster.

We (the entire staff) also wanted to thank everyone, both for their patience during the next few days as we execute the move, but also for being patient with us over the past months as we've worked hard to hunt down problems and get to this point. You guys are the reason why I don't mind waking up to my phone at 3 in the morning to go recover the database :)

-Alex

P.S. Keith and I will be lurking in the comments, answering any questions you may have.

Black PC

I would just like to add a sense of urgency to the earlier news post. Earlier in the year, as posted in the news, we had a security lapse that resulted in user account information being released to the internet.

This was caused by a type of attack called a MySQL Injection, which also resulted in things like NPC accounts being taken over, and things of that nature.

Now, since that happened we have requested four times for you to change your passwords in various mediums. Today we asked again.

There has not been another exploit, there has not been another breach of security. The same exact list of user information is floating around, and users who did not change their information the past four times they've been told to, are now paying the price.

So, one more time. If you have not recently changed your password, I am asking you to please change your password. I'll make an ultra cool free gift everyday for a week next week, if everyone makes an effort to protect their online identity. I promise!

We aren't just trying to make your subeta life hard by remembering a new password, we are trying to make sure that all the work that you've put into your account isn't lost.

Black Laptop

It's my turn to pester you all now about internet safety and security. ;)

As part of our normal security procedures, we are asking you to please change your password immediately if you have not done it in the past month. (This is a good idea for any and all websites you are a member of, and not just Subeta.) Please be sure to select a secure password; don't use your birthday, your dog's name, or something similarly easy to guess.

Any users who have not logged in within the past month are having their passwords automatically reset. If you've just come back from vacation and are unable to log into your account, please use the password request tool, and be sure you have emails sourced from Subeta.net on your safe/contacts list to ensure that it is not trashed as spam by your email provider. Please give the server and your email provider sufficient time to deliver the email.

If you have repeatedly tried the password request tool, given it plenty of time to be delivered, and still aren't having any luck, you will need to email [email protected] to begin the identity verification process required for an account retrieval.

If you're already hitting the comment button to ask if this applies to you, please don't. If you are in doubt, change it!

Thank you for your continued support of Subeta, and have a fun and internet-safe day. :)
