I think the problem is that it's TOO muscular.
That's what makes it look "fat". And a fat dinosaur just looks odd.
And the left palm hangs too low. Makes it look like it has a foot for a hand.
Overall, it's a huge improvement. Just a couple things that bug me a bit. Of course I don't plan on owning one, so I guess it doesn't really matter what I think XD

Mortikings aren't lithe. They have never been, and will never be.
If you want a sleek, slender dinosaur-esque pet, get a velosotor.

Egh, I think a lot of people are missing the spirit of 'constructive criticism' and rather using this opportunity as a chance to insult the artist, rather than give PRODUCTIVE feedback on the art itself. I'm not terribly surprised, but it is disheartening to see people lash out for no reason. shrug The nature of some subetans I suppose.

It doesn't matter what it's refered to as, it still looks a little on the tubby side, which I think was the point. If that wasn't Chilly's point, that's my point.

Chill out, Pants. The whole point of having a News post is to not only give complements but also to give constructive critisim in order to improve on what might look odd, bad or funny. Yes, some of us think it looks chubby in some areas and if it's that many people, perhaps that means it can be tweaked so it looks more muscular instead.
True, you can't satisfy everyone, but if a majority is seeing the same thing odd with a pet, then why not improve it a bit?

I don't see why everyone is making a big fuss. No art is perfect, but I still think it looks amazing. Its not chubby, its muscular. And the mouth isn't small...maybe it should be growling some more, but thats it. Other than that, its nice

The shading itself has improved, however... when I first saw this I thought of a chubby drunken lizard. Although I'm aware the Mortiking is a big, big lizard, I think the muscles should be formed a little sleeker in some areas, but not too sleek, as to not make it look too fat. (The tail can still remain a little fat.)
The eyes need to be a little bigger, but not too big. The mouth, although I like the snarling idea, the way it was pulled off makes it look like it's stumbling around like it's drunk (or perhaps snuffing up mucus). Perhaps if you lengthen the snout slightly more and, along with the slightly bigger eyes, make them more into a scowling look, it would look alot more menecing and better looking.
Finally, I think it would be best to have both arms facing the same downward direction in a tyrannosaurus rex-type fashion, as to make it not look so awkward.
Everything else looks good, especially the spikes.

One Word....
Bravo
Bravo

The first thing I thought was it looks a lot like my BR Mortiking. After comparing them I am sticking with this. He looks a lllooooot like the Bloodred version. Different pose maybeeee?
The second thing I thought was it looks reaaallly muscly. But after further inspection his lil arms look fat. D': He definately looks like a fatty the more I look at him.
The third thing I thought was his mouth looks too small. But that's a whatever point- bigger or left alone I'll be alright with it.
But do not under any circumstances mistake my love and adoration for this revamp- I have been waiting forever for Mortikings to get re-drawn and I am deffinately pleased with the results!

Mrr... Must conjure constructive criticism... I haven't had enough caffeine to give you my usual lengthy list of flaws so I'm going keep it short, simple and brief.
In a nutshell, I agree with angelembryo about the mouth and eye size. (She robbed me of my words. XD) The only other thing that's bothering me is the forelimbs/arms... They seem... I don't know! Awkward? Misplaced? Odd? Pick a word! They just don't look right and they just bother me. Not that it really matters for whenever I get one, it's immediately going to be a special color. However I must point out that I would much prefer the claws on his/the left hand should be pointing downwards. They look insanely awkward pointing up like that.

I prefer the old one as it pops out more. With the new one, I easily skim over it as it's not very captivating. There needs to be more highlights, IMO. I'm not much of a fan of the face...it looks too small and scrunched up. The mouth doesn't really look like it's scowling. Not really aggressive enough. I prefer the bloodred face.
However, the hands are a major improvement along with the fins on the back and its tummy. It also looks more realistic, though, I think that parts of it could be more exaggerated for emphasis.

Terrific... Anyway, what I meant to say, is that I voted for the old because I liked that one's head better, and this one reminds me of a Dillemma (sp?) with the chunkiness. But, having said that, even so-so improvement is better than none at all, and the Mortiking was desperately in need of a revamp. =D
I like the old one better. The new one's snarl looks more "I'm going to kill you" than the old one's "leave me alone".

But if I must, I swear upon my big stupid head that I will keep it as close to the original as inhumanly possible!

There's something I just don't like about the new one and I can't really tell what it is exactly (although I voted for it).
I think its body parts aren't in proportion. The body and hind legs look big, but then you see the head and it just looks small. The way it's turning and facing should make the head seem at least a bit bigger. The body in general just reminds me of Barney's body. It's also a bit too bulky for me.
Also, the black spike things don't look right. Shouldn't the top of then reach its neck? The way it looks now is like they are curving like a "C" (a backward one if you were to face its back) on its back and not touching the neck.
Together, I think it just has perspective problems. The way the head is facing means it's facing foreward and therefore should be bigger in proportion to the body, and the top of the line of the black thing on its back should be bigger/longer because it is coming foreward as well.
So head bigger, longer back thing, and possibly less bulky.
The bloodred one looks perfect though!

I kind of imagine the mortiking to have the lizards equivalent of a lions mouth as regards to how it moves, myself. Like, in the lion king, the lions would have TINY mouth openings sometimes - when they were relaxed or wondering about doing nothing in particular - but when they roared, the mouth stretched RIGHT back up to their eyes. It would look really odd to me for the mouth line to go right up to the eyes when its in a neutral pose like this! (Haha, the Ruffies get a little smile in their neutral pose, and the mortiking tried to smile, but never did take to it!)

It looks a little bulging.
But it'll do, I guess.

I do agree with some critiques here (longer mouth, oddly angled back spikes, and the tail does look stumpy at first glance), but this is a very pro revamp anyway, imo.

Yes, Tianaroo I have seen those muscle magazines. they are disgusting. xD
But keep in mind, humans do not have tails, they are not giant reptiles. The shading gives indication that muscle is present, but the only muscles that seem to be bulging with power are those poor leg muscles. Everything else seems like flab. I think personally i see it this way, because the older mortiking had a curved spine, and there was an indention between the chest and the gut. you could clearly see, that even though the old mking has a belly, it wasn't inflated-looking. The newer one has this buddha belly, and you can't tell where it's spine is because it's giant forearm and back flab hide the indication of a curved spine.
I look at the stomach area, the neck rolls, and the face when i say he looks overweight for a carnivorous and ferocious beast. It's not neccesarily an insult, I just personally see him as more of a threat rather than a grumpy version of barney. xD That's only my opinion, though. ^^
I really like this new re-draw. I never liked the Mortiking. But this makes it look ferocious, like it should be! Great job!!
No insult taken, Aras. I'm just trying to answer too many people at once; mine to you was just an explanation.
Uhm...I can't vote in the new poll because when I click it it takes me to .net not .ws. And when I try to loggin on .net trend micro blocks the entire .net site. o.o
And to answer you, Digi--the mortiking really has a small mouth when it's at rest (again; keep in mind it's not a true-to-life reptile, here). Common's really meant to only be growling somewhat, with the mouth still around normal size and the lips pulled up a bit; the mouth stretches back when it's at a full roar, a-la Bloodred.
I really do think about these sorts of things far too much. XD
I really do think about these sorts of things far too much. XD
I wasn't insulting your abilities. You are far more talented than I will ever be. I just like how the turned head express the height and length of the Mortiking. The common one's jawline covers that I think, or maybe not. I can't figure out what is taking away the height. It wasn't to insult, I rather like the way you draw.
The bloodred's neck is curving because it's -turning its head-.
The common isn't missing it. The common is facing in another direction.
Common is based distinctly off of bloodred, slightly subdued since it's a neutral color.
Also, I think the idea of anyone voting old due to anatomy is laughable. Have you -seen- the current mortiking?

Pff. Am I the only one who loves it, chubbiness and all?!
My only nitpick is the back spikes; they seem to go off at weird angles, as if they're not following his spine, but other then that it's great.
I know the old one was supposed to look quietly menacing, but it doesn't have much of an expression. It just looks blank.

I absolutely love this revamp. I was always a fan of the galactic mortiking's design opposed to the regular design (the galactic version was one of my very first pets!).
However, there is only one small issue I see with it. While it may not be any specific dinosaur (it's a mortiking!) I feel that it is safe to assume that it IS in fact a reptile, and the corners of a reptile's mouth extends to more or less beneath the eye, or very close to that general area (I feel you had this concept down quite well particularly with the bloodred version). The current snarl, to me, appears to be more one that a human or humanoid would pull off, not a reptile. With the way it is now, it seems it would have difficulty opening its mouth entirely. Though it doesn't even have to extend as far back as, say, a velosotor's does; perhaps if it was given just a little more length, it would look even better!
Also, with the tip of the tail not showing, newer members who are not familiar with the old design will never be aware of the fact that there is that little fin at the tip. However, I do not know how important that little detail is. Either way, it looks great to me!

Now that bloodred Mortiking gives off that sense of height. I like how his neck curves, and I think that's what the common Mortiking is missing.
I love his face, but the body makes him look like a fatty. I personally would like to see him more lean, like the killing machine that he is. ^^
Dislike it. It's mouth is strange, it's stance is totally different. It's also far too detailed for the style of the site.

Although mortikings aren't my pair of socks and it's therefore not easy to pinpoint what i don't like in particular about this new version, i dare say the muscle issue is the primary drawback for me. Sort of doesn't fit in the overall style of this site. I feel same about the galactic paralix No real suggestions to 'better' this drawing as i understand the mortiking is supposed to look that tight and compact, especially in the view of wiping out the remains of the previous simplistic drawing style (which i dare say i like better in some subeta pet species).
It's okay <3 I don't own a Mortiking and don't plan to, so I don't really mind either way.
I would crit it too, but there are plenty of others that dont like it either, so Ill just vote the old one and butt out.

ChillyKitten - Have you ever seen those muscle magazines? Where the men on the covers look like their muscles are inflated - well that's this guy. He's all muscle. If it wasn't muscle, it'd be one big flab and there would be no definition what-so-ever. Also, his tail is hidden behind him, so you can't really say he doesn't have a long tail for balance. His head may be a bit small, but in this case, it has to match other versions of this pet. And finally, all the other Mortikings have "bellies" - why is this one so much different?

And c'mon guys, that is not fat- it is MANLY BULK.
