Hi all! For those of you who don't know me, I'm Alex, Subeta programmer. This news post is kind of a big announcement, but it's also a long one, so bear with me. I promise, it's worth it.
It's always amazed me that Subeta's problems with crashes and downtime have become something of a running joke on the site, but I can see why they have. Back when this year started, we were suffering from database crashes every couple of days, sometimes going down for an hour or two before we were able to recover, sometimes much longer. And we had a couple times where we had no choice but to roll the site back for hours (or days) when backups didn't work or corruption was too bad.
Keith and I have been hard at work fixing this situation though. And things have gotten much better. The database now stays up for days without crashes or killer lag, and when we do crash it takes us, on average, less than 45 minutes to get back online with no rollbacks.
But still our core problem remains: both of our database servers somehow have their data corrupted, overwritten with nonsense, which eventually causes us to crash and have to restore from another copy. This has been a vexing problem for us, and it was one of my main focuses when I attended the MySQL User's Conference back in April. And I'm happy to say we now have a very solid theory of what's happening. The details are pretty technical, but the general theory is that the Solid State Disks (SSDs) that our database servers use, and the RAID cards they are connected to, are somehow corrupting the database. This is actually more likely than it sounds, because the disks our hosting company uses in our servers, we've discovered, are a cheaper brand of SSDs meant for things like storing your music on, not running high-concurrency, high-churn databases on.
So we're moving... to a different hosting company, one that has put together a much better setup for us. Our servers will have more memory, faster disks, no RAID cards (which end up slowing the SSDs down), and better support for when things go wrong. The new setup is currently being inspected by the new company, after which WE get to inspect it (likely tomorrow) and then we'll move the site. Even if it doesn't fix the corruption issue (which we are almost positive it will), this move represents a pretty nice improvement for us.
So, what should you expect? Downtime should be contained. I'm actually hoping to only have the site offline for a few minutes, but it may take longer than that. When copying gigabytes of data across the internet, you never really know how much time you'll need. The site will NOT be changing names again, we'll still be subeta.net.
With any luck, when Subeta comes up it will hopefully be much more stable and (crosses fingers) noticably faster.
We (the entire staff) also wanted to thank everyone, both for their patience during the next few days as we execute the move, but also for being patient with us over the past months as we've worked hard to hunt down problems and get to this point. You guys are the reason why I don't mind waking up to my phone at 3 in the morning to go recover the database :)

P.S. Keith and I will be lurking in the comments, answering any questions you may have.

Thanks so much for informing us! I'm looking forward to these improvements, then!
I love how you guys are thankful for our patience. As we'd deserve it, as it wouldn't be naturally to be patient. You rock, thanks

You guys are the best staff of any site that I've ever seen... not everyone would get up at that hour of the morning to take care of things.
You're awesome, and we all love you so very very much. =3

What a relief. I remember how frustrating servers could be when I had my own website; and it was just a personal domain, haha. I hope the speed of the website gets better and everything goes smoothly for you guys!

Sounds good, I hope things work out and the site gets better from it Thanks for informing us, its always nice to be kept up to date on things

And its good to hear that things are running uphill at the moment! Hopefully it just keeps doing so. And of course, thanks for the update on that

Thank you for all your hard work and dedication. I can only imagine how much it takes to keep a site like this running, and I know many people have done a lot to keep this place going. I really appreciate everyone who helps out on this site in anyway.

You guys are AWESOME, thank you so much for all of your super-hard work ! The move sounds really exciting, and I really hope it fixes the corruption issue, so it makes your lives easier. You guys obviously deserve it :3.
Rad. You guys are really something, what with working so hard for this site. Thank you!!!
Massive props for the constant improvement! I gotta say, through it all, every team member's dedication to this site makes this THE place to be. Thank you Alex for letting us know what's up with the site, and Keith, thank you for being around to correspond with your site's (often nuts) regulars and fans.
I've only been around for a year, but in this one year I've seen so much change and activity. I can only imagine how rewarding it must be to look back on the first days of this site and see how much it's expanded as you and others have nurtured the original idea into something known world wide.

Thanks so much for all the hard work. Can't wait for the site to be running and loading better. It will make it easier and more enjoyable for all of us I think. Here's to a quick and painless move to the new home.
The move will be great and thank all of you for keeping this site running even with all the problems it has been experiencing, I love Subeta and can't wait for the move
A move is a good move.. maybe I will come back here and play more.. the running joke got old after a few years..
I agree with Foggster and Valarauca.

right, it was/is a running joke, and all the chaos around subeta IS a part of subeta (and the site wasn't crashing once every few days but every day ).

XD I would feel odd not seeing the sql errors and the random log offs... Thanks a bunch you guys! I hope to see more imporvements. You should do a site wide event to celibrate this fantastical move! XD I am sooo excited!

thanks for keeping us informed. it's nice to know whats going on here. I don't really understand most of it but it sounds like there won't be as many Errors on the site. and subeta changed names? what was the old name?

Best of luck with the move. Hope everything goes smoothly and quickly. Many thanks for all that you do, both of you.

Thanks so much for all your hard work and for keeping all of us updated on the changes.
Thanks so much for all your hard work and for keeping all of us updated on the changes.

We sure do appreciate the updates and the care you take with Subeta and with us. I remember very well the 3 days when we were down, but Subeta is the best and we always wait and come back. Love, Kayleigh(lighthawk)

I have a question that keeps annoying me. Each week I notice that some News posts have .ws and others .net. Ever since the issues, I've been using .ws. Will yall clarify which we should be using and try to pick one or the other? It's rather annoying clicking on links (especially when rushing to the TS) and being directed to the Login page.
Thanks for keeping us informed! It's good to know that things will hopefully be fixed soon.

Keep it it up like that - SUBETA is the best petsite ever!!!
