Hi all! For those of you who don't know me, I'm Alex, Subeta programmer. This news post is kind of a big announcement, but it's also a long one, so bear with me. I promise, it's worth it.

It's always amazed me that Subeta's problems with crashes and downtime have become something of a running joke on the site, but I can see why they have. Back when this year started, we were suffering from database crashes every couple of days, sometimes going down for an hour or two before we were able to recover, sometimes much longer. And we had a couple times where we had no choice but to roll the site back for hours (or days) when backups didn't work or corruption was too bad.

Keith and I have been hard at work fixing this situation though. And things have gotten much better. The database now stays up for days without crashes or killer lag, and when we do crash it takes us, on average, less than 45 minutes to get back online with no rollbacks.

But still our core problem remains: both of our database servers somehow have their data corrupted, overwritten with nonsense, which eventually causes us to crash and have to restore from another copy. This has been a vexing problem for us, and it was one of my main focuses when I attended the MySQL User's Conference back in April. And I'm happy to say we now have a very solid theory of what's happening. The details are pretty technical, but the general theory is that the Solid State Disks (SSDs) that our database servers use, and the RAID cards they are connected to, are somehow corrupting the database. This is actually more likely than it sounds, because the disks our hosting company uses in our servers, we've discovered, are a cheaper brand of SSDs meant for things like storing your music on, not running high-concurrency, high-churn databases on.

So we're moving... to a different hosting company, one that has put together a much better setup for us. Our servers will have more memory, faster disks, no RAID cards (which end up slowing the SSDs down), and better support for when things go wrong. The new setup is currently being inspected by the new company, after which WE get to inspect it (likely tomorrow) and then we'll move the site. Even if it doesn't fix the corruption issue (which we are almost positive it will), this move represents a pretty nice improvement for us.

So, what should you expect? Downtime should be contained. I'm actually hoping to only have the site offline for a few minutes, but it may take longer than that. When copying gigabytes of data across the internet, you never really know how much time you'll need. The site will NOT be changing names again, we'll still be subeta.net.

With any luck, when Subeta comes up it will hopefully be much more stable and (crosses fingers) noticably faster.

We (the entire staff) also wanted to thank everyone, both for their patience during the next few days as we execute the move, but also for being patient with us over the past months as we've worked hard to hunt down problems and get to this point. You guys are the reason why I don't mind waking up to my phone at 3 in the morning to go recover the database :)

-Alex

P.S. Keith and I will be lurking in the comments, answering any questions you may have.

Thank you so much for your hard work and for keeping your users informed about what's going on! It really helps me want to stay here. One small question for Alex, Keith, or anyone else. You mentioned subeta.net in the big, long post. What's the deal with subeta.net?

Sweet! <img src="http://images.subeta.net/smilies/6398_emoticon_grin.gif" border="0" />
Hopefully hopefully EVERYTHING will be safe and sound during the transfer! <img src="http://images.subeta.net/smilies/6398_emoticon_grin.gif" border="0" />
That's awsome. I'm glad you found the reason. Great job! And thank you for all the work you do <img src="http://images.subeta.net/smilies/6398_emoticon_grin.gif" border="0" />
I absolutely LOVE this site!!! Thank you so much for explaining everything to us - it truly helps us feel like we matter and belong!!! Thank you for all your hard work! This sounds like an exciting adventure that will take us all into a wonderful future!
So there is no risk of item, sP, loss, etc?
I think I just fell in love with Alx... Because of his "I forgot your answer" comment.
Thank you subeta staff for taking the time to TELL us the situation, it's much appreciated. I will try and find a good replacement while the site goes down for the move. <img src="http://images.subeta.net/smilies/6398_emoticon_happy.gif" border="0" />
Thank you for the update and good luck with the move. <3
You guys are the bestest!
can't wait to be able to enjoy a faster subeta cause everything's been so slow for me lately

you guys should get a holiday named after you or something <img src="http://images.subeta.net/smilies/6398_emoticon_heart.gif" border="0" />

Thank you for all your hard work.

Subeta is a great site C:
I think I can only give the 'Thank you!' back to you and the whole staff Alex! You guys and girls of course are really giving everything for this site, though it's sometimes not as appreciated as expected and you're drowning in complains and BAWWWWs!

It's really rare that a site's staff cares so much for it's users as you do, that's one of the reasons I love this site for! <img src="http://images.subeta.net/smilies/6398_emoticon_heart.gif" border="0" />
Alex, As always, thank you for the explaining things to us. You are the real deal. Subeta is a better website because you are here! I may not understand half of what you say, but I know that you are out there doing your best for us!
Thanks. Some of the errors were starting to get annoying. But thanks for all of your hard work to make the site more faster and efficent. <img src="http://images.subeta.net/smilies/6398_emoticon_grin.gif" border="0" />
I want to thank Subeta and your staff for being current and keeping us up to date. A lot of other sites don't do that; it's really kind of you guys. Also: Congratulations. I'm sure that's in order! Moving the site to a better company could, and most likely will, in the long run be a better choice for you guys and (hopefully) keep you from having to be called at 3 am. ;p Really, I do respect your hard work and dedication to keep Subeta running and us content.

Also. Stop spoiling me with free gifts. (Not really. I love the wigs. <_&lt<img src="http://images.subeta.net/smilies/6398_emoticon_wink.gif" border="0" /> <3 Much love! Jessica
Just wanted to say thank you both so much for the information and for working so hard to get Subeta working as efficiently as possible. <img src="http://images.subeta.net/smilies/6398_emoticon_smile.gif" border="0" />

That's one of the reasons I keep buying CSC. I have a good idea of how much time, effort and money it takes to do what you do and don't mind supporting the effort as long as I keep seeing the amazing efforts y'all are making. <img src="http://images.subeta.net/smilies/6398_emoticon_smile.gif" border="0" />

Which reminds me...I have MCTs calling my name. <img src="http://images.subeta.net/smilies/6398_emoticon_wink.gif" border="0" />

You guys are the best! Iv played on sited that don't even acknowledge major crashes/errors to their player much less try to explain what caused them. YOU ROCK!!!
I read a few paragraphs and gave up, tl;dr?

But yea... <img src="http://images.subeta.net/smilies/6398_emoticon_happy.gif" border="0" /> Glad we're moving to a host with no STD's.
thanks for all your hard work! <img src="http://images.subeta.net/smilies/6398_emoticon_smile.gif" border="0" />

So is it subeta.net or subeta.net? That's the only thing I'm confused about..Other than that, it all sounds like a great plan. :3
Eia
Wonderful! Let's all cross our fingers and hope all goes well.

Also, does this mean no more SQLs running around the site? <img src="http://images.subeta.net/smilies/smiley_sadface.gif" border="0" />
Does that mean it will only be .net after the change, and no longer .ws also? Or..?

Nice to know things should become more stable with the hard work being put into it.
I'm very new here, but enjoy the site immensely! <img src="http://images.subeta.net/smilies/6398_emoticon_grin.gif" border="0" /> I appreciate your efforts to make the site fast and stable for the users!! <img src="http://images.subeta.net/smilies/6398_emoticon_smile.gif" border="0" />
you'll think this will ever happen again? (is it safe to break out the t-shirts?)
thanks for your hard work!
I have been playing over 5 months and at first the downtime seriously irritated the crap out of me... but I was patient because its WAYYYYY better than neopets and I have a LOT more fun on here than I do neopets.. and I'm super happy you guys have finally fixed the problem and the site will be more stable! So thank you alx and keith for your hard work in making sure the site is awesome for us users.. its much appreciated <img src="http://images.subeta.net/smilies/6398_emoticon_smile.gif" border="0" />

Vibraba: what a coincidence! I had an answer for you, but I forgot that too!
billy: ahahaha I tried searching for one of the SQL items, and It says the item must have more than 4 letters XC
hearts thanks for caring x3; hope everything works out okay...
Aw, drat! I had a question, but I forgot it! T_T
thanks for the info i am not very good with these terms you use iessds etc but changing seems like a good idea so thanks again and good luck with a speedy transfer
So what will you guys be doing with the Sql Items? <img src="http://images.subeta.net/smilies/6398_emoticon_raspberry.gif" border="0" />
<label id="item_Sql_1" onMouseOver='showPlus("132035")'><img id="Sql" src="http://images.subeta.net/items/minion_sql.gif" class="non_wishlist" style=""/></label><span class="wl_add" id="plus_132035"><a name="item_Sql_1" href="#item_Sql_1" id="wishlistadd_132035" onClick='addWishList("Sql",132035,"item_Sql_1")'><img src=http://images.subeta.net/add.png border=0></a></span>

Alex, Keith, and the rest of the staff are doing an outstanding job with everything. <img src="http://images.subeta.net/smilies/6398_emoticon_smile.gif" border="0" />
Thanks for the notice. (: I hope all goes well.
That sounds so good! I hope it will work as you want it to work and I hope that will mean less unintentional latenight work for you.

This site is soo amazing, I really can not understand why I didn't get into "subeta living" much earlier.. xD

. . .

I really like squirrels, but I hope they will stay in woods and vaults from now on. =)

Now I'm utterly speechless, so enough said. smiles happily and leaves
Accidentally posted a blank comment; my mistake.

Much thanks to both Alex and Keith. I know you guys bust your asses for the good of this site and I appreciate greatly, as does everyone else who is a part of the Subeta community.
like everyone says, thank you for the updates <img src="http://images.subeta.net/smilies/6398_emoticon_happy.gif" border="0" />

they are what help make the downtimes bearable <img src="http://images.subeta.net/smilies/6398_emoticon_wink.gif" border="0" />

Tesla: Currently each database server has 4x32 GB SSDs. Master is RAID-0, slave is RAID-5. I believe the new servers will have 2x80GB IOFusion drives in a software mirror configuration.

As for RAID cards, most RAID cards on the market today are heavily optimized for slow, clunky hard drives. SSDs are so different from HDs that cheaper RAID cards can outright break, because their controllers just don't expect the disks to reply as fast as they do.

Secondly, I've heard that even a single SSD can completely overwhelm the bandwidth of a RAID card.

The new SSDs are IOFusion drives which link to the servers over the PCI-Express bus, the same bus that modern graphics cards use <img src="http://images.subeta.net/smilies/6398_emoticon_smile.gif" border="0" />
Ah, sorry to hear you guys had a rough night, keeping us running stable.
This sounds like it will be an awesome improvement to the site! Hopefully this means no more substantial lags I've been experiencing lately. It's good to know that you guys have a solution!
Thanks for continuing to make Subeta awesome!

Thanks for answering my question Alex! <img src="http://images.subeta.net/smilies/6398_emoticon_grin.gif" border="0" /> This definitely seems like a solid approach and I'm so happy to see Subeta so well-taken-care-of. I'm really glad I migrated to this site. ^__^
Needless to say: you guys rock. I'm so ecstatic that you've found a likely solution to the problem <img src="http://images.subeta.net/smilies/6398_emoticon_smile.gif" border="0" /> Good luck with the move! I hope it's flawless.

I just have to say You have always done a wonderful job Alex keeping our favorite hang out spot running! THANK YOU to both you and Keith for getting the site up and working better in the future. With out you I doubt this site would be half of what it has become!
Keith: Ahh, all right. The Redundant, Inexpensive Disks have failed. <img src="http://images.subeta.net/smilies/6398_emoticon_sad.gif" border="0" /> Thanks for answering and letting us know what's going down. <img src="http://images.subeta.net/smilies/6398_emoticon_smile.gif" border="0" />
I got a lag and a MySQL when I pressed the 'comment' button.
OH THE IRONY <img src="http://images.subeta.net/smilies/6398_emoticon_happy.gif" border="0" />

Thank you for being so kind to give us a detailed heads up!
Good luck with the move <img src="http://images.subeta.net/smilies/6398_emoticon_smile.gif" border="0" />
Thanks Alx, Keith and the rest of the staff. It's nice to be informed of whats going to happen, and I hope the move goes without any problems!

SUBETA FTW! <img src="http://images.subeta.net/smilies/6398_emoticon_heart.gif" border="0" />

Though I must say... I think I'll miss the cute little SQLS that run around the sight.... NAH! xD
Hope it all works for you, thanks for the notice <img src="http://images.subeta.net/smilies/6398_emoticon_grin.gif" border="0" />
Thanks so much for keeping us informed <img src="http://images.subeta.net/smilies/6398_emoticon_smile.gif" border="0" /> I cant wait to see the site become better <img src="http://images.subeta.net/smilies/6398_emoticon_grin.gif" border="0" />
hmm.. if it means Subeta will run more smoothly then I'm all good with the move and stuff, Thankyou for informing us <3
Thanks for keeping us all updated! I hope everything works according to plan!
That's amazing. I look forward to the move, I'm on this site pretty much all day, and I bump into more lags then crashes. Glad to see that you guys are taking this seriously and working hard to keep this site alive. Good luck!
