Hi all! For those of you who don't know me, I'm Alex, Subeta programmer. This news post is kind of a big announcement, but it's also a long one, so bear with me. I promise, it's worth it.

It's always amazed me that Subeta's problems with crashes and downtime have become something of a running joke on the site, but I can see why they have. Back when this year started, we were suffering from database crashes every couple of days, sometimes going down for an hour or two before we were able to recover, sometimes much longer. And we had a couple times where we had no choice but to roll the site back for hours (or days) when backups didn't work or corruption was too bad.

Keith and I have been hard at work fixing this situation though. And things have gotten much better. The database now stays up for days without crashes or killer lag, and when we do crash it takes us, on average, less than 45 minutes to get back online with no rollbacks.

But still our core problem remains: both of our database servers somehow have their data corrupted, overwritten with nonsense, which eventually causes us to crash and have to restore from another copy. This has been a vexing problem for us, and it was one of my main focuses when I attended the MySQL User's Conference back in April. And I'm happy to say we now have a very solid theory of what's happening. The details are pretty technical, but the general theory is that the Solid State Disks (SSDs) that our database servers use, and the RAID cards they are connected to, are somehow corrupting the database. This is actually more likely than it sounds, because the disks our hosting company uses in our servers, we've discovered, are a cheaper brand of SSDs meant for things like storing your music on, not running high-concurrency, high-churn databases on.

So we're moving... to a different hosting company, one that has put together a much better setup for us. Our servers will have more memory, faster disks, no RAID cards (which end up slowing the SSDs down), and better support for when things go wrong. The new setup is currently being inspected by the new company, after which WE get to inspect it (likely tomorrow) and then we'll move the site. Even if it doesn't fix the corruption issue (which we are almost positive it will), this move represents a pretty nice improvement for us.

So, what should you expect? Downtime should be contained. I'm actually hoping to only have the site offline for a few minutes, but it may take longer than that. When copying gigabytes of data across the internet, you never really know how much time you'll need. The site will NOT be changing names again, we'll still be subeta.net.

With any luck, when Subeta comes up it will hopefully be much more stable and (crosses fingers) noticably faster.

We (the entire staff) also wanted to thank everyone, both for their patience during the next few days as we execute the move, but also for being patient with us over the past months as we've worked hard to hunt down problems and get to this point. You guys are the reason why I don't mind waking up to my phone at 3 in the morning to go recover the database :)

-Alex

P.S. Keith and I will be lurking in the comments, answering any questions you may have.

Yay, this is great! I'm so happy for the site and for you guys (and for the awesomeness we get from this too, but you know what I mean... ). Maybe you won't have to wake up to your phone at three in the morning quite so often XD. Thanks for working so hard. <33
thank you so much for the info <img src="http://images.subeta.net/smilies/6398_emoticon_happy.gif" border="0" />
very excited to see how it all plays out!
Thanks for keeping us informed and working so hard to fix all of these problems, Alex; I really appreciate you taking the time to write up your wall-o-texts to keep us in the loop. ♥
Alex, it is us that should be thanking you and the staff.
I know how frustrating it is for me to be hit with the downtime, I see how frustrating it is for other users in the forums as well so I can only guess as to what it puts all of you through.
To have to listen to us bellyache, gripe, moan and complain over every little hiccup that happens and then to even want to fix everything for us when it does go blammo, is nothing short of amazing to me.
On top of that, you also find ways to keep us updated and up to our necks in new content!
So yes, thank you Alex and Keith and everyone else on staff, for keeping the hamsters running as efficiently as possible!
YaY!! This is what I have been waiting for!!
Thanks Alex for the info.

Great job guys!

Thanks for keeping us updated.
Hope this makes everybodies especially you guys lives easier
Oh! One question.

After this issue is taken care of, is it possible that all of the Search issues will be fixed? Those are driving me to pull my hair out.
Thanks for keeping us informed.
Love you guys and love the site!!
This is wonderful to hear <img src="http://images.subeta.net/smilies/6398_emoticon_smile.gif" border="0" /> For those of us with expiring GA medals, should we wait until after the transition to activate our new ones?
Congratulations on upgrading to a better service! <img src="http://images.subeta.net/smilies/6398_emoticon_smile.gif" border="0" />

good luck with the move!
crosses fingers everything goes smoothly
nods head pretending to understand Good luck on that!
I have not been here very long, so I was not aware that the site address had changed before. I also was not aware of crashes being some-what of a joke here amongst the players. But, hey, that isn't your guys' fault! <img src="http://images.subeta.net/smilies/6398_emoticon_smile.gif" border="0" />

I haven't personally seen any crashes as far as I am aware of, but I have seen the site noticeably slow down. I am looking forward to seeing the updated (hopefully) speed of the site.

Good luck Keith and Alex! Have fun transferring everything! <img src="http://images.subeta.net/smilies/6398_emoticon_grin.gif" border="0" />
The thought of having to go back to neopets and not play here is traumatic for me. Since i found this site, i wouldn't even think of going back to that horrid place. I love it here and I am so happy it isn't an ad riddled corporation. LOVE you guys!
I'm very happy about the move and am hoping it goes well with very few if any glitches. I also hope this is going to be close to the end of the MySQL issue. Good Luck and I appreciate everything the entire staff does for us players and the way we are always kept updated on things. Thanks again Keith and Staff!!!

Glad to see that y'all are traveling to greener pastures. Hopefully the down time won't be too long cause now that I've been playing over here, I realize how much Neo blows goat. cries Don't make me spend too much time over there!!! cries
You and Keith are both awesome! Thank you so much for keeping us updated and trying so hard to work on the problems...BIG HUGz to you both!
Well i hope it goes well and helps improve all workings.
There is one question i have, will this enable links to work properly as-well?
It's just a lot of times i have after clciking some replace net with ws cause it comes up as net and even with cult links put in part of address that when i hover on link it dissapears like forums when clicked
But...........who's going to take care of the squirrels now? lol
this is the best site ever. the most dedicated site to its users. thank you for treating us with care and giving us the best you can. we all really appreciate it. =) really, thank you. almost wishes my anti-hugging self could give you guys a hug =)
aw thank you =)
Sounds good, hope it will work <3
Is that why the site has been so laggy and slow lately? O.o because of the problems with teh servers or whatnot? I hope this will fix them

Hey give us gold users extra time after this! the sites been so laggy I can't do my quests hardly. Not without getting a far lesser reward. pokes 10 point token that should be a 15
Thanks for the nice detailed update! It's really incredibly refreshing to have these kinds of updates (and regularly!) on this kind of website!... Definitely a different experience from many similar sites I've been on and a part of.

Thanks guys!! Best of luck with all the hard work you've got coming while you move the database and such.
Thanks so much for the update, Alex. Good luck with the transition. Subeta = <img src="http://images.subeta.net/smilies/6398_emoticon_heart.gif" border="0" />
You know, the very thought that the staff of this site are willing to be upfront and honest just makes me tingle inside (no sicko jokes please lol)

I'm constantly amazed that everyone is willing to give up important information rather than leave the users in the dark, and that's why I stay and play here instead of going elsewhere.

I just wanted to thank the admins and staff for working so hard, especially when the site crashes. You are so very appreciated!!!

Thanks again <img src="http://images.subeta.net/smilies/6398_emoticon_grin.gif" border="0" />
Well, seems it has all been said before!
But I must say thank you from the bottom of my wintery, frozen <img src="http://images.subeta.net/smilies/6398_emoticon_heart.gif" border="0" /> I love all of you from Keith to Alx to MBIF to Amber and all of the ticket helpers!

You guys are the best and that is what keeps us coming back.

hugs

PS I agree though, the lag is worse than down time!
That's wondermous news! Thanks for all of the info, we always appreciate knowing what's going on. Hopefully you've found a great SQL-B-GON solution ...they keep stealing all of the nuts... <img src="http://images.subeta.net/smilies/6398_emoticon_grin.gif" border="0" />

This site has come a long way since the day I joined almost 3yrs ago. Glitches, crashes, the long cat, hostile take overs and lots of wtfs?? But one thing has remained the same, Keiths determination to make Subeta work and be enjoyable. It hasn't always be easy but he keeps coming back. Thanks Keith and all the others who keep on keeping on......
Thank you so much <img src="http://images.subeta.net/smilies/6398_emoticon_grin.gif" border="0" /> and thank goodness you're keeping the domain name but... will .ws work too? If not I have to update my wikis and bookmarks and... a whooole lot of stuff on Wikibeta <img src="http://images.subeta.net/smilies/smiley_sadface.gif" border="0" />
Yay! I read on twitter that you guys were looking at a new host, I look forward to the change. This site, even with it's glitches, though, is completely addictive. Thanks for everything!!
Yay! Good luck<img src="http://images.subeta.net/smilies/6398_emoticon_grin.gif" border="0" />
8D sounds exciting!

if i double-posted, sorry, but i just saw the part where the URL will remain the same Dx

thanks again guys. x)
How exciting! I hope all goes well over the next few days. <img src="http://images.subeta.net/smilies/6398_emoticon_grin.gif" border="0" /> Thanks for keeping us informed, it's good to know that you guys are always trying to fix the problems instead of giving up completely. This is why I love this site!
Quoting FlamableSkittles: "So is it subeta.net or subeta.net? That's the only thing I'm confused about..Other than that, it all sounds like a great plan. "

I found that confusing, but mention it b/c I too have a similar question. Is it .net or .ws? Or does it even matter? Currently my browser reads .ws And I too wish to express my appreciation for the Subeta staff. You guys rock. =)

awright! ive been noticing lately that the server's been slow, so this is great that itll be faster. thanks for letting us all know too, rather than just doing it.

quick question since im kind of server-stupid; the URL of the website won't change will it?
Thank you so much, Keith and Alx both, for keeping us updated. <img src="http://images.subeta.net/smilies/6398_emoticon_smile.gif" border="0" /> You guys make the downtime worth it! Here's hoping everything works out. <img src="http://images.subeta.net/smilies/6398_emoticon_grin.gif" border="0" />
So is this the reason why Subeta's been lagging for me all day? I was just wondering cause I've been RSing and I've noticed the slowness all. day. long. x.x
It appears the annual host hop/massive downtime is late this year. Please tell me you will be inspecting the servers personally Alex, cause you actually seem to know something.
alx: Sweet! <img src="http://images.subeta.net/smilies/6398_emoticon_grin.gif" border="0" /> Those new servers sound nummy to move to. And ouch, yeah, I haven't really dealt with servers, so I didn't know how terrible RAID could be for them. <img src="http://images.subeta.net/smilies/6398_emoticon_raspberry.gif" border="0" />
As always, thanks for keeping us informed. You have my continued support. I hope all goes well.
It's so wonderful the way you guys let us know whats going on and work so hard to improve the site. It's another reason that Subeta is my favorite internet site!!
Yay, I hope there will be no more SQLbeta. <img src="http://images.subeta.net/smilies/6398_emoticon_grin.gif" border="0" />
We love you too!
Much luck you guys.
I hope the problem is fixed with this, cause that would be supahh!
Thank you for moving, this is something I have been waiting to see for a LONG LONG LONG TIME. throws confetti
We've been sticking with Subeta from the beginning and I still have no plans of going elsewhere. So thank you to the both of you for doing the same.

Thank you. <img src="http://images.subeta.net/smilies/6398_emoticon_heart.gif" border="0" />
Thank you very much for your hard work and communication to us. I wish you the best of luck and speed.
Maybe I should go buy some CS items, this has to be costly.
