'Amaya' means "night rain" in Basque. Her parents thought it was beautiful and she does too.

Being born into an ambush of tigreans, there was an expectation of toughness and physical strength placed on her small shoulders the moment Amaya opened her eyes.

Unfortunately, a dozen older cousins were not forgiving of a playmate who never placed first and never took the prize in games of pounce or wrestling. They teased her mercilessly for her small stature and limited speed. For years, she built a knowledge of evasion, becoming withdrawn and finding any excuse to avoid the games that were a natural part of growing up in her tribe.

A growth spurt came at last and with it, a new-found confidence. No longer would her eyes dart away from foes who wanted to tweak her ears or pull her tail. Shyness gave way to ferocity, her quick temper giving into the temptation of using her razor-sharp claws on those enemies who she could overpower or her even sharper wits on those she could not. She went from being terrorized to being the terror of her tribe, much to the dismay of her loving parents.

They got her a minion, hoping that a caring companion might bring their daughter back to the sweet-natured child she'd once been. She adored the little invisible cat, naming her Evanescent. Evi was stealth embodied, allowing Amaya to sneak treats late at night and boosting her pranking abilities until even the adults of the village were wary of her approach.

Amaya was too intelligent for her own good and too energetic for a simple village school. When a representative of SAI passed through, looking for youths who might be interested in volunteering for a training program for agents, Amaya's parents were quick to recommend their brilliant but headstrong daughter.

She was wary of the psychologists at first but when phrases such as "advanced martial arts training" and "stealth and tactical evasion" started to be thrown around, intrigue won out over any lingering fears.

She excelled in the program, learning the disciplines of hard-won patience and wisdom, training her mind as much as she was training her body. She learned to let go of her past more and more as she gained a level of confidence those old village bullies could never hope to achieve.

She began to believe herself truly invincible.

Her first few missions were wildly successful, only adding to her self-assurance that she was someone of immeasurable value.

Pride comes before a fall.

She did not fall hard, but her first failed mission was a humbling lesson in teamwork and never becoming too comfortable in one's skin.

Many successful missions have come between that first mistake and her current record of excellence. She delights in those puzzling cases that require both the body and the mind, relying as much on Evi as her minion does on her for food and shelter. (They trained together for those missions that require someone small enough to squeeze into very tight spaces.)

Nor has she forgotten her roots. Every year around Luminaire, she returns to the village where her life began. There may be some questions among the family about her city habits, (Her insistence on pairing salad greens and nuts with the usual fare of giant chunks of meat raises eyebrows.) but she is well respected and her efforts for the good of Subeta well appreciated.

Her older cousins make it a point not to meet her eyes when a wrestling match is suggested.
