Myrzath
The Windjammer is a floating titan ideal for long sea voyages, offering both comfort and ample room for the research equipment that always seems to fill at least half the cabins no matter how many scientists are invited to take part in the latest conservation effort.
Myrzath delights in planning voyages with destinations ranging from the ice caps off the coast of Arctic Frost to the warm, tropical waters lapping at the shores of the Omen Islands. Pete's love of food pales next to her passion for protecting the ocean and keeping it free of pollution. Myr has served as a consultant at three major oil spill sights and is not the least bit afraid to get her claws dirty. There is many a wild minion that owes its life to the tigrean's patient efforts to get every last bit of toxic sludge cleaned out of feathers and fur.
Serena was one such rescue, a curious crow that refused to return to a dull life in the trees when she could sail the world with a mistress who always has some tasty morsel of clam or codfish to share. About the only thing they disagree on is water. Myr will happily spend hours splashing about or diving to look for buried treasures. Serena likes shiny baubles well enough but she will never get her feathers wet to seek one. She's got Myr well trained to bring the shinies on deck.
Myr makes a mental note of each scientist boarding the ship as her crew checks and double-checks the gages. Broadwig is a superb marine botanist, Grummin a spectacular geologist, and Kylovar came recommended as an expert in the behavior of squid and octopi. Then there is Tenizon, an odd-looking fellow with as many assistants as he has barnacles on his back. It is said the shark-like experiment can sense the flow of the tides by dipping one fin in the water. He is no less skilled at sensing the severity of approaching storms. Her crew will be effective, professional, and well protected against Mother Nature's nastier side. Her own mastery of all areas of Oceanography makes her the perfect choice for expedition leader.
Her thoughts wander to the family she is leaving on shore as the ship gives a mighty blast of its horn to the delight of the children on the dockside. They have supported her since she was just a little cub taking her first swimming lesson and it is from the family wealth that she was able to purchase a ship so fine as the Windjammer. She lets her guests believe their funding is through this university department or that branch of the government. Only those she staffs have reason to suspect that she could fund a thousand such voyages without assistance. Since they are hired for their discretion, she does not worry over much about her secret getting out.
Her father is the great Myrranos, retired Veta Lake Ambassador. He was able to serve six successful years on the Centropolis Council, imrpoving the city's air quality by thirty percent. Her mother was no less impressive. She was one of the founders of Medicontra. Her retirement two years ago has in no way lessened her desire to help low-income youths access the medical and dental care they need. Her uncle Taigros actively serves as Ambassador for Shadowglen. He is currently petitioning to have a certain section of natural forest declared a nature preserve to protect families of wild tigreans threatened by a developer's desire to build a spooky theme park on their homeland.
Every member of her family has a cause that they believe strongly in but none are quite as passionate about protecting the environment as her brother Mydor. He is nearly her opposite in terms of looks, his white body almost aglow where her fur is midnight black and his pale blue stripes a perfect contrast to her midnight blue. A judge on the law council of the Sacred Lands, he has drafted nearly a hundred mandates to improve and enforce the environmental laws that have begun to be taken more seriously in Subeta since Esther's efforts at making Subeta a greener place came to the attention of the general public.
She has many strategies to deal with long nights of open ocean as the ship passes into open water. She always seems to have a ready supply of jokes to make crew and guests alike laugh. There is always one intellect in the bunch that won't believe her claim of three-time Subetan Youth Chess Champion until she puts them to shame with a gently purred "Checkmate".
Her private project is a small device that she hopes to someday give as a gift to the world. Though it will only be the size of an electric pencil sharpener, just one of the devices will be capable of compacting and recycling one thousand square feet of garbage into wonderful pellets that can be used as a renewable fuel source. She wants every household in Subeta to have one free of charge and will not breathe even a hint of her plan to anyone until even the minor flaws are worked out. She shudders at the thought of what sabotage the Recycle Beast might attempt if he ever gets wind of what she is working so hard to create.
She orders a platter of freshly caught seafood from the ship's cook, enjoying a feast of various types of shellfish. She insists that catches be humane and that only enough food be taken for a meal. If she gets even a hint of a staff member not following her orders, that one will find themselves floating back to the mainland in a rowboat.
They arrive on the research site on the fourth day. Serena squawks in dismay as Myr leaves the other scientists to unpack their unruly equipment and dives beneath the crystal-clear surface of the water.
The sunken ship left from the days when Pirates and Islanders went to war is resting on a shelf well below sea level. It is Myr's hope that this craft will serve well as a reclaim zone for coral reefs kept alive and healthy through magical means. She leaves the arrangement to Broadwig. The little fish flee Tenizon's presence, coming back slowly for curious nibbles at Myr's fur when he is well past. They see few fur creatures at this level of the ocean. If it were not for the device allowing her to breathe, Myr would giggle. Those rubbery lips tickle!
Myr makes sure to note the progress made on the reclaim site and the sighting of a rare golden carpling she sincerely hopes will not be the only one of his kind in the area. Before she blows out her candle, she holds her illustration of the fish up for Serena's approval. The crow's beak touches the page, bringing the illustration alive in a brilliant shimmer of color as flat scales turn a rich shade of gold.
