"Well, what is this, that you can't see?
With ice cold hands,
taking hold of me?
When God is gone,
and the Devil takes hold,
Who'll have mercy on my soul?
Well, he is Death! And none can tell,
If he'll open the door
to Heaven or Hell..."

—"O Death" (American folk song)

The Reaper

I am an Experiment 1031. Or so I was told. That doesn't sound very exciting. But my job is. I am a Reaper, now. I was not born one and did not choose this life after death, though I have come to love it. The one who came for my soul was old and weak. I thought I was dying right up until her ominous form began to fade away in strips of weakened matter, like a ghost seen through sheets of rain. I was real in a way I never had been, as if I could feel every tremor rising from the planet's core. Every life was a thin thread that connected to my own core and I had a sudden knowledge of how every mortal calling Subeta home would eventually die. I can only reap those whose deaths are caused by weather but I can sense the death of any mortal at a glance.

I did not understand my new powers, only that I must follow those invisible lines that tugged me from Arctic Frost to the southern shores of Shadowglen amidst the power of storm clouds heavy with the charge of lightning and the fresh scent of rain.

The other Reapers were kind in the early days. They could not tell me how to do my job but they did their best to counsel me on the changes that had given me lightning eyes and charged my scythe with the power to strike down the weak and the mighty. My first Reapings were sloppily done but my friends never criticized. They promised I would get used to my new status and granted me a permanent place at their table for those rare times when no creature required our services. They also helped me to find my cozy cave on the coast of Arctic Frost, one I was able to remodel into the sort of living quarters befitting a Reaper.

I know what you're thinking. He must live in a coffin with skulls mounted on spears and a giant stone wheel for sharpening his scythe. Not at all. My prize possession is a pinball machine. Just because death is my job does not make me a Dracula reject.

I can't help thinking fondly of home as I fly through a dismal fog bank and over the rolling green pastures of Subeta's best stretches of farming land. I adore storms of all kinds but there are weather patterns that are no joy to fly through. This storm is heavy with accumulated power, yet the key moment when that power is unleashed has not quite arrived. The forces of nature are angry. They are not patient like the water that slowly erodes or the whispering winds. They want to rip and tear and utterly destroy but there are rules that must be obeyed. Until my target is sighted, not one flash of lightning will brighten the sky.

The old man walks down the center of a dirt road churned by the wheels of many carts. Even from the heights of Heaven I can hear the tuneless song he whistles. A thick white scar stretches from the corner of his left eye down the bridge of his nose to end at the right corner of his lip. This is not his first encounter with lightning. He is old, and tired, and has ceased to be afraid.

He sees me when I ghost down, raising a hand as if greeting an old friend. I like the ones that do not deny death is upon them. There are those who have challenged my presence. Some are amusing. I will let them live a few additional moments just to listen to them trying to test their wit against death. There have been only three that were able to convince me not to take them. All are dead now, but in the time they gained, they went on to do great things.

The old man's body goes rigid at the first strike, falling limp as he tumbles in the dirt. My hands are gentle as I close his eyelids. I can sense a woman on a bicycle who will soon find him. (Her time is not up for nearly fifty years when she will meet with Pestilence Shadow who Reaps those killed by contagious disease.)

With my task completed and no other mortals requiring my services, I am free to pursue my own pleasures for a while. I make for the Living Dead Cave, a sort of hangout for Reapers.

Flame Shadow, Brine Shadow and Cosmic Shadow are all off duty. They greet me eagerly as I float through the narrow tunnel and into the huge underground cave we call The Pit. There always seems to be at least half a dozen pizza boxes sitting on the lime green counter and a turquoise cabinet allows us to select from a number of our favorite games. There aren't enough of us off duty to get a good poker game going so I snatch up the checkerboard and give Brine Shadow a meaningful look. That hydrus pest has won the last three games we've played, but this is my day. I think Brine is glad to get the call for a trio trapped under a capsized boat.

This may come as no surprise, but Reapers are very sore losers.
