Hi everyone,

Thanks so much for bearing with us as we work to perfect this latest upgrade to the site. I know that initially it seemed like it was causing more problems than it fixed, but I promise you in the end it'll all be worth it.

To reduce the number of problems happening while we transition to this new system, we'll be scaling back on the queries that we send to the slave server, and Keith and I will be selectively picking queries that can run on the slave, rather than splitting all of them. This will solve problems that occur randomly due to timing issues, like the wizard giving out quests with insane time limits (unfortunately, that is a bug, and not just the wizard going senile).

That said, there will be some downtime (probably 15 minutes worth) tonight at midnight, Subeta time, to synchronize database servers.

Hi all! Sorry for that recent bout of weirdness. Allow me to explain!

Keith and I rolled out some very important updates tonight, updates that we hope will improve performance considerably.

Subeta has two database servers, db1 and db2. At any given time, one of them is the "master" server, and the other is a "slave". This just means that only one server actually processes updates from the site, and the other is read-only... you can only ask it questions, not make changes on it. The slave server listens to the master to stay up-to-date on changes.

Prior to our updates tonight, Subeta only used the master server. The slave was around as a backup in case something happened to the master server, so we have a second server ready-to-go.

We've now completed changes to our code that allows us to use both servers at once. This means that instead of reading from only one database server, Subeta now uses two whenever it can. This means, ideally, that the load on our master server can be cut in half.

We're hoping this will result in a faster and more stable Subeta experience. However, the database code is used by the entire site, and it's impossible to test everything out by ourselves. So there may be problems. If you find a problem (something not working that used to), please make a report about it in the bugs forum, and we'll fix it as soon as we can!

The following is the transcript of a Subeta News Network special report from the front lines of the war against squirrels:

Database server 2 sustained heavy damage today when squirrels overran a disk array controller, forcing technicians to update its firmware.

Fortunately, no civilian data was harmed, as database server 2 was operating solely in backup capacity at the time.

However, the recent squirrel attack will result in a 15-minute downtime window tonight beginning at 1 AM Subeta time, in order to repair the broken link between the database servers.

Programmer alx announced the downtime earlier today, as well as hinted that new tactics are being deployed to hopefully win the war against Subeta's squirrel population once and for all.

Profile Changes

Right now the old style profiles are broken, but should be fixed before the end of the night.

However, for those of you still using the old style profiles, they are going to be removed from the site on January 21st. That gives you a few days to save the content on your profiles, and maybe try to start working on a new profile.

On January 21st, all users will be moved to the v2 style of profiles. :)

Profile Changes

A few small changes to the profiles. We have added Profile to Profile viewing options, so that you can look back at what your friends and you have talked about ;)

Also, there are now quick reply buttons that you can click, and send a comment to a friend without leaving the page.

These will be modified and made more transparent over the next few days, and profiles may look weird for a few minutes here or there.

Hello all!

Just to let you know, there will be some brief downtime around 9:15 pm subeta time while we feed the squirrels--- oops, I mean switch database servers.

Shouldn't take more than a few minutes, the only reason the site needs to be down is so the change to db1 can happen all at once (as opposed to some people being on db1 while others are stuck on db2, which would cause havoc on the synchronization).

What's this? Reports of angelic lasiruses and chelons flying over the Sacred Lands! Perhaps they're looking for new homes.

Legend has it that long ago there existed a dragon the length of the longest river in Subeta. The immense size of the dragon led to the dragon being unable to live in peace, as there was nowhere suitable to hide. Most Subetans misunderstood the dragon and believed him to be a cruel and ferocious beast. All the dragon really wanted was some occasional peace. His violent defense was mistaken for bloodlust and many a Subetan warrior died trying to slay the beautiful beast. None were successful in their bids to rid Subeta of the Brass Dragon. His scales were as impenetrable as his length was near immeasurable. Several summers ago however, the Brass Dragon mysteriously disappeared from the landscape of Subeta. None seem able to discover why or where the dragon went to. Was he slain and reabsorbed by the lands he roamed endlessly whilst being tormented? Did he find a sanctuary of privacy at last? Regardless of the cause, Subetans do not forget the glimmering and majestic creature, with many an ornament, toy and weapon, being crafted in his memory.

You can find this particular set of clothing crafted in the memory of this event in the Cash Shop, inside the Mysterious Costume Trunk.

The Token Shop has been rather busy the past few days, with baaaaaa's and sqls! Today, however, they have this odd ringlet...I wonder what it does. :x

Hello all, alx here.

Just thought I'd let you know what's been going on over the past 24 hours here. Last night I moved our database back to the primary server, which has been upgraded with a faster configuration of disks. This seems to have increased our stability quite a bit.

Secondly, there will be some more downtime soon (8:45 PM Subeta time). This downtime will be to fix some irregularities in our web servers and cache system which have been causing problems of late.Thanks for being patient with us while we continue making improvements!

Hope you had a good new years! The Goodie Bags floating around the site have run out, so I hope you got all the items you wanted!

It would seem that the snow and ice of Arctic Frost had only begun howling in December. More glacier pets have been seen wandering the Polar Ice Fields, including paralixes and waradors.

Hello all, Alex here.

First off, let me say happy new year to everyone! I really enjoyed my holidays this year, and I hope you did too.

That said, I'd like to make a new years resolution of sorts. Just prior to Christmas, our "recode" version of wardrobe was opened to Gold Account holders for beta testing, and will probably officially replace the old wardrobe before the end of January.

The Recode is a total replacement of Subeta's programming and is absolutely vital to ensuring that the site can continue to grow. The problem is that we're already feeling these growing pains. Recode will eventually fix these, but only when a substantial part of the site is running recode programming. I don't want to wait that long, and I'm sure you don't either.So I'm beginning a "stability project" for Subeta, of which recode is only a part. The stability project will address issues in Subeta's code, servers, database, and handling of downtime. The goal: 99.9% uptime/month by Dec 31st, 2009. I think we can make it!I won't go into much detail about the project here, but I will list some key points:

* Automatic recovery from SQL lockups: This is actually already working. You may have noticed (I hope you have) that the site doesn't go down for hours at a time now. The lockups are now detected and the database reset automatically, within minutes of it happening. No more waiting for Keith or myself to notice the problem and correct it.

* Tune-up of Subeta's old code to reduce the load on the database and eliminate "bottleneck" points that cause lockups.

* Changes to old code necessary to support running the site on a MySQL master/slave system instead of on just one database server.

* Downtime tracking and reporting! We'll need to keep track of when and how long the site is down to measure progress.

* And many more small changes that I hope will make a big difference!

None of this can happen overnight, but expect to see things gradually improve over the course of 2009, starting soon! Thanks so much for being patient with us in the meantime!I hope that was simple and understandable enough.

I'll address a couple of FAQs:

Will this delay the recode (much)?

Yes, but like I said, better to fix the problems now rather than wait for recode to fix them later. It shouldn't delay it by much though, recode is part of the stability project and ultimately the goals are the same.

That sounds nice, how can I help?

I may have need of some testing volunteers eventually, but for now please just be patient with us.

Why haven't you done this sooner?!

Really, it is a work in progress. Up until now though, there really has been no yardstick for progress made, other than "we had a lot of database problems this month," etc. The idea of the stability project is to attain a stability goal (99.9% uptime/month) by a deadline. With the ability to measure downtime, we will be able to focus our efforts on those activities that are having the greatest effect, which often are not the ones you'd think would.

Does this mean you will be fixing the ______ bug?

Most likely, current bugs will be fixed when their area of the site is recoded, unless they are related to stability problems. As it is, it is hard to tell whether bugs are caused by bad coding or simply what I call "server weather conditions" (e.g. high load causes a mysql connection reset in the middle of an attempted trade), which are more difficult to track down.

As always, we really appreciate your patience and support. Without you guys, we wouldn't have anyone to do all this work FOR!
