Oooh, sweet! Maybe it is taking an idea from Neopets, but I like the idea. It gives users who put a lot into their pet's profile the recognition they deserve! Bravo, staff! -clapclap-

The last time I looked Subeta wasn't a Utilitarian regime, which means that those who are able or willing to put in the time to learn how to make coding work for profiles, to learn how to write a compelling character story, or to save up and obtain those perfect minions and treasure items should be rewarded for it. Subeta is a game site afterall, and the point of any game is to play it and move forward, not sit there with it in the case and still expect to see the ending. This interesting new feature gives me the incentive to work on those things that I may not excel at.

To be honest Neo was the first thing I thought of when I saw this. But then I quickly discarded that thought... because Neo is not Subeta and vice versa. Then I thought this might turn into another evil popularity contest. So I sat and thought for a bit before posting and I realized something: if you look around, there's already popularity 'contests' (for lack of a better word) going on anyways in various ways... a few could be seen as bad ways yes, but there are various good sides to it as well. For example:

There are folks who are marvelous artists who will draw HA's (for a bit of sp) and are quite popular for that. Yes, they do charge quite a lot of sp for their work, but despite that folks still seek them out specifically for 'their' art. I can't draw to save my life and I am glad there are folks who can do it for me! I figure if they are that good then they are deserving of the sp (and the popularity)!

There are folks who can restock like crazy, beating out even some of the Staff on items. Some folks look at this as a bad thing... but only if you are not the one with this talent! Sure, sometimes I too may gripe and grumble about an item or three being gone before I can even focus to click on it, and they often overcharge for it later in their shops. But eventually either the item does drop in price after a while or I will manage to make enough sp to buy what I want. I am pathetic when it comes to making sp... yet I can still manage to get the few really expensive things for my gallery, so I really can't complain. Again, if these folks can do this that well, then they deserve the benefits from it!

There are folks who constantly chat on the forums, giving advise when needed, offer tips on dressing your HA, and even host special forum events and give-a-ways during the Subetan holidays. They are well known for being there... in fact some folks will actively seek these folks to chat with them or join their events. They are popular because of this and they too deserve it.

There are folks who always have a welcome word and (once in a while) may even have a small gift for new folks just starting out on Subeta. I've been a recipient myself of these last types and I was very grateful for it. They help make the game more enjoyable, more friendlier, and could even lead to a lasting friendship with someone who is new.

So... if someone has the talent to put together to make a really dazzling pet profile, I think they should be just as deserving of some recognition for it!

I didn't have lick of pet profile coding sense before last week, but have taught myself how to code from scratch in just days (and with help from <a href="/users/Asmoday" rel="Asmoday"><img src="http://images.subeta.net/icons/gold.gif" border="0">Asmoday</a>)! It really isn't that hard! I don't have the money for my pet's "perfect minion" yet, so I will save for it, not that hard as well.

Unlike Neopet's we have so much control over how our pets look and their personality. Users are actually nominating for this spotlight, winners are not being pulled out randomly, there is thought and decision going into who will win. Some of the newest users can code and design just as well as the staff members that have been here for years!

GOD! Stop complaining. XD If I can do it, anyone can, believe me.

Now, that leads me to what I actually came here for: Is this going to be a weekly contest, bi-weekly, or what? <img src="http://images.subeta.net/smilies/6398_emoticon_smile.gif" border="0" />

Dude why is everyone here so obsessed with being not like neopets? It's like Ebony Dark'ness Dementia Raven Way's obsession with not being a prep. Just be what you want whether it's something neopets does or not.

BTW I am excited to see some cool pet profiles.

hmmmm the name does have unfortunate similarities to that 'other' site... and yes is usually a popularity contest altho its good you cannot nominate your own.
But considering how much goes into avatars I woulda thought you could have one for them too... perhaps a profile one as well...

That's exactly what I thought when I first read this. Granted, Subeta users seem to be more mature than Neopets users in general, so hopefully this won't turn into an all-out popularity/advertising war like the Beauty Contest on Neopets.

I generally don't do much with my pets' profiles, but it will be nice to see those who do spend time on layout, story, and art get some recognition.

As a side note, I think changing the name (even a little bit) would help.

Huh, seems like you can't vote for some pets. Might want to iron out some of those flaws.

In any case, I'm a bit worried of where this will head. There's going to be tons of billboards, people complaining and begging to have their pet voted for... Just seems like there could have been another way to bring more "attention" to the pets, y'know? yea this wont be for any of my pets. i have no profiles or stories. very little for matching TCs. but im kind of excited to see what this is all about and how it'll work.

To tell you, it will most likely work like Daily deviation on deviantart art were users nominate certain images and tell why they think this picture deserve it. If it is around that I'm totally for it. It wont be a "popularity" competition at all.

Still can't beleive you guys a ranting on this though. It wont be a "I'm more popular then you war" since the votes will be most probably checked and approuved by a staff. Give them a chance, don't you dare to judge them by what neopets already done.

I havent been working on my profiles cause I thought they were changing again soon, poop. Good idea, but I see a looootttttt of "lookit my pet!!" billboards spamming the ads soon...

i think this is a wonderful idea and yes go off with your neopets crap .this site here subeta stands way above that site as here they care about users and yes we have rules here but its a game site thats worth staying here for not like the crap at neopets .good job subeta team...i love this idea.

I like the basic idea, even though it's similar to the Neopets contest, but the other ways in which it could become similar worry me. Everyone becoming so competitive over their pets that the forums are overrun with "vote for me" signatures, overlays become wildly expensive and sought-after (and stolen and plagiarized by both displayers and sellers), and theft of stories/art/treasure chest ideas/pet page coding becoming rampant. Hope there are safeguards in place. And is the whole site voting for the nominees, or the staff, or what?

I actually don't like this. It's a good idea in itself, but has a lot of potential to be abused. If it's strictly a nomination-count, then it's basically just Subeta Idol. Also, there should be a rule against using a layout that someone made for you, as that's more or less getting a reward for someone else's work. But that's just my two cents.

@FeralKoala : It seems a pet can only be nominated once per.. round (I guess?). So I don't know if this is necessarily a "popularity" contest because of that, although a single 'popular' user may have more than one of their pets nominated.

Which brings up a question... How often would a winner be chosen? -ponder-

Yay and nay?! I'm happy there's finally a pet spotlight, but a bit confused by how it will work. Does Subeta actually have the final say on who wins, or is it strictly a numbers game over who has the most nominations? I'd rather have seen it as a contest where you submit it to Subeta Team somehow, rather than relying on popularity.

What a great idea! Now this gives me a good motivation to actually finish up my pets and their profiles, heh. And to all those people comparing this to Neopets, please just stop. They're both pet sites so there are going to be similarities, okay? Would you all rather the pets on Subeta didn't exist? I mean, Neopets created their pets first so Subeta must have copied them OMG. I apologise if that was overly harsh but come on, guys. How many times have we heard the 'Neopets created this first!' line. It is getting rather tiresome and I'll bet Subeta is getting really fed-up of hearing it.

It's nice to see that lots of people are also praising this idea, though. Users spend millions on their pets so an idea like this is amazing.

There's so many nice pet profiles out there, it'd be so hard to choose :O
