At first I was like 'OH DARKONIT REVAMP IT MUST BE AWESOME.' As Darkonites have always been on of my favs.
Then the new image loaded and I was very dissapointed.
As a lot of people have said, quite a few things irk me about the new one.
The tails seem to stretched out, like they're just there to fill space. The closest one to us seems longer than the other. Also, they're too fat for me.
The skull/cap. I don't really like the shine, nor do I I like how the tuft of fur is really coming from nowhere.
The legs just look all wonky to me. Especially the front ones.
The whiskers and the scars are gone, which totally take away from the Darkonites personality. I know some of the 'new' colors don't have the scar and some do, but they all have whiskers. >>
The muzzle looks like something grabbed it a broke it downwards.
The head spikes are too small.
It's smiling. Always thought they were s'posed to be evil.
The 'bone' thingys on it's neck don't wrap around to touch it's chest thing.
And I kinda like the squareish look of the old's one chest.
Oh, and the eyes are just to small and shiny.
And the splatters. Why are they so light? e.o
Yeah, I think I jabbed and poked at it enough. Most of these things have already been mentioned, if not all of them. First time I ever voted for and old pet though. XD

I prefer the old one, for a couple of reasons.
The contrast is a bit too low. I really like the darkened fur pattern on the old one's legs, and its bright red eyes are striking. The new one has those qualities, but they're much more muted and it loses some of its charm.
I could live with those, but the smile on the new one is a big deal-breaker for me. It reminds me far too much of "extreme" 90's video game mascots, like Spyro or Sonic. To me the darkonite always had a bit of an angry or brooding quality, and the snide cool guy smile does not do it for me at all.

I like that the chest looks more outward, it looked a little concave in the old one. I also like the spikes coming out of the side of the face better on the new one.... and that the hooves are more distinct. I barely noticed that they were hooves and not paws on the other one. However, I don't like that there is no scar over the one eye... or that the markings on the legs are washed out. I liked the black eyes and nose from the old one better. I dislike the smile as well. I agree that the head looks a little shrunken. I would like if you could see protruding ribs on the stomach of the new one.
I feel bad saying so much about it, because it is clearly a better quality drawing... but certain features of the old one need to be carried over in order for me to like it as much.

I love the revamp, but the coloring/shading style looks incredibly strange to me! Alo, the back leg seems to be a bit on the large side, and the front paw (its left, our right) Looks a bit off, too :C
Nose farther up on the snout (looks Roman-nosed currently.)
Add whiskers back.
Bigger cheek-spike things.
Other than those things it support a re-vamp.

I like the old one better. The new one's missing the bright pupils, crooked whiskers, frown, and dark markings on the legs/belly area. The revamp kind of lost the darkonite personality; it looks less menacing and more cutesy. I liked the shading on the chest plate-ish thing better on the old one, and the revamp's tuft of hair looks kind of odd. I'm sure the revamp will look fantastic, but it needs a bit of tweaking. :]
The drawing is way better for the new one...but too be honest, I prefer the old one because like other people have mentioned, some details are missing after the revamp....the face is a bit odd and the head seems too small for the body.
I like the personality of the old one better. I prefer the scowl to the smile. I also prefer the front feet as hooves.
Personally, I think the old version just needs some thinner lineart and more detailed shading, and it would be good to go.

I voted the new one, because I think a revamp would be nice, and the art is an improvement, but the reasons stated by other people for the old one I definitely agree with.
-The smile doesn't have to be a bad thing, but I don't think it works; it needs some tweaking.
-I did prefer the stains on its feet being darker.
-Mostly, I really liked the slash on its left (our right) eye.
-I like the hair floof on the old one better. While the new one has shading, it's too round and I prefer the old one's spikiness.
-One thing that especially stands out to me are the ears. I love the shape and angle of the old one's ears (especially the one on its right, our left). The new one's ears are too round and misshapen; I find them to be a sore thumb .
-The grey/red combination doesn't look as good as the almost black/red combination of the old eyes.
-I don't like the cleanliness of the new tail(s). I miss the stain of the old ones. The same with the feet.
-with the 'cap' on its head, I like the old one's lack of a sheen. It gives off the impression of clay, which is nice. Aversly, I don't mind the sheen on the new one's body. I think fur is fine if it's shiny.
-I prefer the darkness of the new one's chest, but the belly of the old one.
I think that covers it. Though I'm pretty late in comments, so fingers crossed it gets noticed x]
Nice art, either way!

I voted for the old one as well. As lovely as the revamp is, I prefer the current image as of now.
The shading is a definite improvement but the overall pose seems uncomfortable to me: the foreleg closest to us is strangely lumpy (for the amount of flesh on its bones, the joints are too defined -- they look swollen), the back legs are a little too far apart from each other, the neck seems nonexistent (the old version implied a neck), and the head looks too smooth and rounded.
I also agree with a number of other users in wanting to see the dark points darker -- the new darkonite looks really washed out, especially the eyes. I loved that the old darkonite had red irises that really popped out from the black surroundings.
Lovely job in defining the spikes though. I love how much more bone-like they look.

The whiskers removed kind of killed the new version for me. The tiny eyes make it difficult to see it's expression and the smirk, while cute, doesn't fit the 'pissed off' darkonite we've come to love. The front feet seem to be missing their 'hoof-like pawpads' that the older one had.
I believe the newer one needs a bit more tweaking before i can fully vote it in.

I really like the new anatomy of the Darkonite. Just not the facial area.
The expression is just not fitting of what the Darkonite is know to be. So, the smile has to go.
I think the bigger pupils did a better job for what the Darkonite was all about.
Also, something is off about the front legs. I don't know what... but, it doesn't look right.
Everything else looks really nice. I can't wait to see what comes out of this revamp.

I totally vote for the new one but there are a few things I don't like. The hair coming out of the skull looks very misplaced. I mean it was weird in the first one but more so in this one. I don't know why everyone is having a cow over the smirk. It doesn't look like a friendly smirk, more like mischievous. The eyes bother me a little bit too, going from so big to so small.
I agree with the already stated comments about the front legs being too close together, the off smile and the much too small eyes and iris.
That being said, I'm voting for the old one, I feel it shows much more personality.

I'm going to vote for the new one. I would love to see the Darkonite revamped; it might tempt my to adopt my own.
However, there are a few minor details that I am praying will be taken into account:
1.) That smile. Please... please make it a frown. He's lost a lot of his character and looks like every other Subeta pet now. And I know the idea is for the art to all be on the same level, but that doesn't mean we need identical pets. His frown made him stand out.
2.) A lesser complaint, but the markings on his legs should be darker. They're too subtle and hard to see as of right now.

I'm surprised more people like the old one than the new one. I think the new one could use a little tweaking.

Normally I like the revamps better then the old version. This time I voted for the old version. While the artist did there customary great job and the lines are nice and sleek the dark is no longer a dark and edgy pet.The smile is just no.While I like the new versions eye shape the iris is to small. The stance makes him look like he is about to tip forward and face plant.I do like the more defined look of the tail.Over all my opinion is with a bit more tweaking the pet will live up to his full potential. For now in this version He has gone from grumpy down town ruff blue collar to smug up town GQ .
I do think the darkonite needs an update, and it is very lovely. I just think it should have maybe one more layer of the shading put into it. To me it looks slightly flat. I also agree with others when they suggest the front legs be farther apart and the whiskers. I can be nitpicky about all the updates, but its just because i love LOVE most of he pets as they are :]
Other than slight changes that other users have suggested, I absolutely LOVE it<3
I always loved this pet though :]

I'm kind of nervous about posting this here because people can get rather nasty when it comes to pet revamps, but here's my personal take on what I think should be done/edited about the new Darkonite:

Yay crappy ms paint edits.
Basically main points are remove the smile, maybe give it a frown like the old Darkonite, make the snout not so rounded, make the pupal/iris bigger, give its whiskers back and maybe space out the front legs a bit? I dunno.

Wahhh, the art/shading is so much better!!
I still prefer the older one still, however.
The reasons are because its lost a lot of the little markings that made it unique and cute. Like the frown, whiskers, the dark markings on the legs, its bright red eyes...
I'm gonna vote for the older one... I love the direction the new one is going!! I just still prefer the old one... Hopefully the drawing will be altered?
Keep up the great work!! ^^

Ok so I'm not crazy. Lum mentioned it looking off balanced but I think I know what it is. I too was originally looking at the back legs but I think it's the front. The left leg (again looking at it) seems too inward and close to the other.
I hope the new art version wins. While it needs to be improved slightly, new is almost always better, and indeed this needed a new design. Well done Subeta artists!

Hmmm there's a couple of things bothering me about the new one.
1: It's not as dark (see the darker parts on the old's limbs/tummy)
2: Smile....why is it smiling? ;-;
3: I prefer the old one's eyes. They look more sinister.
4: I kinda feel like the right cheek (looking at the image as it is) is kinda flat. Idk I feel like the spikes are behind the cheek versus on it compared to the roundness of the more hidden cheek. Maybe I'm crazy on this one. X3
Overall, awesome and I cannot wait to see a much needed update.

I want darkonites to be revamped so bad, but I can't stand behind this new one. My main complaint has to do with the overall pose. The poor thing looks so off balance! Maybe if its hind legs were closer together, or its front legs weren't so parallel, the pose wouldn't look so off. The front legs look too thin when compared to its thick hind legs. I also think the head is too small. I don't need it to be gigantic, just a little bigger like the old one.
I know the artists will be able to take our comments and make the right changes. They've done it before. Thank you for listening to us!

Personaly, I love it. But I agree that that smile is too ''happy''. It also looked better when it was more faced to the viewer. But I do LOVE it! I want one now... :P
The art is certainly more refined, but it's lost most of its charm. All of the lines are too smooth and round, and the shading is really anticlimactic. Also, I disagree with the decision to change the facial expression to a smile. It's not in keeping with the character of the Darkonite. On an unrelated note, the new one's face looks like Sonic the Hedgehog.
I've never voted for an old version of a pet before, but the new design has missed the mark, even if the art is nice.

I feel like it's leaned forward too much... like it's tipping forward? And The hair on the head doesn't seem to come out at a "natural" angle. The only other thing is that there seems to be something off near the left side of the face (looking at it, so its right). I think that it seems a little stubby? short? not sure, exactly, maybe I just think the top of the nose is too rounded, kind of like a teddy bear. Other than that, I think it's headed in a great direction and I look forward to seeing how it goes.
I agree with a lot of the comments that were posted in regards to the new art. The shading and general art are much improved, but there are a few areas where it feels like something was lost.
I would love to see the original expressions and whiskers put back. The smile seems really out of place, and the head does seem kind of large. I don't own a Darkonite, but they seem to me to be kind of a pet that isn't all there, I mean it's brain is popping out ;) I would also like to see the eyes adjusted. The pupils look much too small. (I'm not sure how to explain it, but I really prefer the older pet's eyes)
I'm glad to see so many people commenting and taking this seriously

i definitely agree that it shouldn't be smiling, and its missing something without the whiskers. also since the mouth's black line doesn't go all the way, and its got the highlight color, it kind of looks like its wearing lipstick. a lot of it just looks different, very little of it actually looks better. the tail looks better, the helmet/skull whatever it is looks better. the rest is just flatter and smoother.
While the art is, as always, excellent, the new one is far too sleek and refined looking. The thing I like about Darkonites is that they're sort of rough looking. The new version has more hair tuft than exposed brain, the huge evil red eyes and almost bobblehead like quality large head are both gone, as are the darker leg markings, and... that smile.. just.. no. I also really dislike the well-defined rear hoof on the new version.

Hm. Frankly I'm a little torn about this, even though I don't have a Darkonite. On one hand, the old one seems to have a stronger turn towards the viewer and the tilt of the head kind of invites me to look at it more. It does lack a good bit of detail on parts that matter, like the head plate- that thing is the closest thing to my "face" so I'd expect at least some wear-and-tear on it or some shading to indicate age. The front paws have that odd standby of cartoony cats and dogs having colors right at the edge of its paws. That trend never made much sense to me, other than the first artist to ever make that kind of cartoon actually have a furry animal with that paw pattern. I have nothing against it, but I like the newer edition's version of the front paws. Simple and well done. The old Dark' looks like it has a concave chest by the shading on the chest plate- so great improvement on the other one not having the illusion of a concave chest.
There's a lot of good things about the new one too. Better proportions in the body and head; the tails look more natural, and the inexplicable dirt or water stains on the old version's feet are gone; and more tasteful details, always a plus! What I noticed though is that the scar over the eye from the previous version is missing. I haven't been on this site from the beginning, but I think that was one of the design elements of the Darkonite. Also, the spikes are smaller. The head and body angle isn't turned that much towards me, and if it weren't for the eyes I would have thought it was facing towards my left, like that's way more important than the fleshy meat meal right in front of it. The eyes, or the irises anyway, are kind of shiny, which is fine in strong light, but I'm not too sure if that's the default lighting for all the other pets. I do love the sheen in the coat though. I know that's contradictory to my last statement, but a shine of good health even in a "disfigured" animal is usually liked.
Hm... all things considered, I think I'm going to push for progress. This will always be a working progress, but it's always a good thing to have something to work off of.

The head on the new one seems too small for the body, it looks shorter and somehow less menacing and evil. I've been expecting a darkonite revamp for a while, but I thought if anything it would get slimmer, this new one seems kinda chunky and squat. Honestly, it, uh, kinda reminds me of the old subeta style pets, rather than the new ones. I don't like that the new one got rid of the dark marks around the paws either.
And bring back the whiskers!!!
And bring back the whiskers!!!
While the art on the new one is much better and has better shading, I voted for the old one. I don't really like the new one's face, and it lost a lot of it's 'furriness'. The old one looked furry and made you want to cuddle it, even though it would probably protest loudly and maybe try to gnaw your face off. It was grumpy and furry.
The new one looks smooth, it's lost all the fur. And it lost it's grumpiness, now it's smug.

My main pet is a Darkonite...so needlessly to say I'm happy they are getting an improvement.
The ONLY thing I can truly say I dislike on this new one, is the face...the face looks so small/smooshed/distorted compared to the rest of the body. I believe its mostly to do with the snout.

I think the quality of art on the new one is definitely better, however, I don't think it really sticks close enough to the design of the old darkonite -- the new one is smiling whereas the old one is frowning, the cool leg markings are far lighter in the new one, and the pupils are almost too small in the new one. In terms of personal preference, I think the snout would look better less rounded. Overall, though, a great improvement -- I can't wait to see the next version of it.
I don't understand why the new one is getting so much hate. I reaaaally like it. I admit, it could use a bit of a grumpier expression. And I noticed a comment (though can't find the user suddenly) that the face appears like a character from Sonic the Hedgehog. I'd have to agree.
But really, that's my only issue. The texture and body build looks much better. And honestly, the new one looks more similar to some of the more expensive darkonite colors. At least, in my opinion.
The smirk is easy to look over, in my opinion.

Oh, and I just noticed that the front paws on the new one are a bit on the small side in comparison to the old one, too.
I wonder what will happen if the Old one gets more votes... Will it stay that way or will a 'fixed' revamp take place? If the old one wins, I guess it means it doesn't need to get fixed, since it isn't broken? Maybe the shading on the Old one can get better, or just make the revamp all based on the old one (position, expression, some details like the whiskers...).

I like the new one, but it could still use some touching up. First thing I noticed was that the irises are too small. Second thing I noticed was that the bone-like things around the neck and front legs are quite a bit smaller than they were on the original. The back legs might be spread a bit too much, too, but I'm not sure. I read a few of the other critiques, and they're right, too. The face needs some work and the whiskers need to be on the new one. Unlike some of the other people here, I don't really care if it smiles or frowns or has a neutral expression, but if you're going to make it smile, I'd suggest you give it an evil or at least mischievous smile more like what the Charlies have.

I don't know, I like the old one better. The art may be a LITTLE outdated, but I love the Darkonite for its rough, gangly appearance and would hate to see it changed too much. I also prefer the old pose - it just seems more dynamic and really... planted.

The new one is nice, but I think it's a little too posh. The original darkonite is kind of icky and malnourished, while the pose of the new version is a little too proud and groomed. Something more snarrly or slinky should do the trick, maybe darken the patterns on the limbs as they seem to be about the same shade as some of the shading on the rest of it. Like the others have said, the new eyes are too sonic-ey. Overall the new one is an improvement stylistically from the first, but it's not quite there yet! C:
I think the eyes are pretty well done, and overall I like it, but the smile looks really unnatural (either because it goes up too high or the snout is too round, maybe both) and the paws being so much smaller than the hooves looks a little strange, like it would move oddly when it walked. Also, I think the black flame markings were a cool part of the design and shouldn't be that subtle; I like how they're placed currently, but they should stand out just a little and be one of the species' signature features.
It's almost there, but I don't think it should replace the current one just yet.
It's almost there, but I don't think it should replace the current one just yet.

The colouring on the new one is very nice, I really like the dimensional look to the eyes, they look so 3D! I also like the back hooves, I never noticed that the Darkonite had hooves and these are so devilish looking!
I hope my criticism is constructive. Even though the eyes are gorgeous, I'd like to see the irises larger like the older version, and also as red as the other version. There is a very sort of devilish look to the darkonite and the bright red brings that out.
The shading on the legs could be darker. I like the dark to light variegation on the old one, once again, referencing devilishness. The darker version could be blood or tar or even char marks, on the new version I almost couldn't see the markings.
Lastly, if the head was a big bigger, the ears (or horns?) a tad smaller and the dark thorn like growths a bit bigger. This pet is pretty wicked looking, so emphasizing the thorns and so on is a good thing.
I hoped that helped, I seldom critique because I don't want to be negative. Overall I can tell the artist worked hard to honour the spirit of the pet.
