"Across the lansdcape, steam vents hiss gaseous breath from deep inside the planet, creating an environment that feels like it hangs in the balance between our world and another.”
~Stefanie Payne~ A Year in the National Parks

Working for Zak has been one of the greatest privileges of my life.

Never mind that he's Subeta's best vulcanologist and one of the most knowledgeable beings alive in the area of seismic volcano patterns. He also happens to be one of the nicest Subetans you'll ever hope to meet.

I interned for him when I was a steam-headed young idealist only two years into my Bachelor's program. He said he saw potential in me right from the start. I think he just liked having someone willing to haul heavy field equipment for free. I never felt he was taking advantage of me, though. Quite the opposite. I learned more in a day from Dr. Blaze than seven professors could teach me in a full year. He had a way of making even dormant volcanoes seem alive. I can't really put it into words.

Oh, lava lumps. Would you please excuse me for a moment? I need to take this call.

"Station X873. Come in X873. This is Base 9J01."

"I read you 9J01. What have you got for me?"

"We've got a spiked reading. Repeat, a spike in Sector CENT125."

"Send me the data?"

"It should be uploading to your screen right now."

"...I'm seeing a lot of red, 9J01."

"Glad to know my eyes aren't going bad. You want to log the report or should I?"

"In the middle of something. Let me know what HQ has to say?"

"Affirmative. Over and out."

I do apologize. There's never a dull moment around here. You might think studying volcanoes is a lot of staring at seismic charts and studying long-dead lumps of rock. You wouldn't be wrong, but when the world starts warming up to blow its top, you've got to move with all the speed of a cadogre launching into orbit. Five minutes can mean the difference between saving a thousand lives and hearing about the casualties from Titania McGee.

You didn't just come to hear about my daily work tasks, I'm sure. You wanted to know when my fascination with volcanoes first started. Let's see...I must have been around four or five at the time. My family lived over on Dark Matter Avenue on the Darkside. I used to go hunting for rocks for my rock collection every day, but nothing ever beat the very first one I found. It was a piece of obsidian with a flaw at the center, a red streak like a little river of lava nature had preserved just for me. I used to stare into the distance for hours, wondering what it would be like to actually walk down into a volcano. It's not for the faint of heart, even when you're facing one that's been dormant for a thousand years. There's a certain dark majesty down there in the depths.

Darkside is the home of my heart but I find most of my work takes me to Centropolis these days. The seismic activity has been off the charts these past few weeks. It wasn't even this active when Tempest made her debut. We're keeping a careful eye on developments, for the sake of the citizens of Centropolis. It's always the risk you take, living in a large city. Besides, as one of the dozen vulcanology consultants under contract with the Subetan Scientific Society, I've got to stay close to headquarters to answer the questions of those Blackmoon corporate buffoons that don't know a magma pool from a roasted marshmallow. Not that I'm complaining, mind you. The members of the Society are fantastic. Blaze is one of them. He recommended me for the post. If only corporate minds would study up on the fundamental scientific principles before the quarterly budget meetings, we wouldn't always have to go at each other like...well, like felis and ruffies.

Not that there's any danger to the public, of course.

Would you like a snack? I would love some ice cream, but I don't have the time. How do I eat it? No, its not impossible for a reborn. She grins. You just have to be good friends with a wonderful Mage.

She nods to a shelf to the left where you see two gold heavy bracelets and a pair of formidable black gloves.

I use those Bracers of Ice from my friend, and my special lab gloves I got from Dr. Asmodeus in trade. Works great! But, here, instead of ice cream, I always keep a bag of roasted nuts on hand. Almonds and cashews are my personal favorites though I'll eat just about any type of nut. I like them dry roasted, honey roasted, even roasted in chili spice. The extra protein helps keep me going when I've got to pull an all-night watcher shift.

Speaking of all-nighters, I do hope you'll forgive me for cutting this short. I've only a few months left in my program before I earn my Master's in vulcanology, you see. The conclusion of my dissertation is proving to be a real challenge. Who has time for constant trips to the library. Besides, books and magma don't get along so well.

I do hope Alexander can someday find it in his heart to forgive me for what I did to that copy of the Magma Encyclopedia. How was I to know that the magma on the cover was purely decorative?
