The Informer

The club is packed almost to capacity.

It usually is, on the nights Carina sings.

Her voice always takes her listeners on a journey, whether it's to an exotic foreign corner of Subeta where they can go on an adventure from the safety of their seats or back in time to that tender moment when they first discovered love. She makes the elderly feel youthful and the young like they can do anything. The songs she chooses to sing are always authentic, not regurgitated pop hits that are on the radio today but gone in a week.

At the end of the night, the club band extends their usual invitation for her to join them on tour. How she aches to say yes!

She cannot. Her secret life demands that she remain in her community, doing that work that is critical to the safety of every citizen yet confidential to all but the highest-ranking members of SAI.

Carina is an informer.

She was recruited right out of college after an agent spent months observing how good she was at people-watching. She could strike up a conversation with anyone and keep a cool head no matter the situation. She was the very last sort of person anyone would expect to be working for the government.

In the evening hours when a warm cup of tea and good book were calling her name, she would set aside such personal considerations to find the most action-packed party in the neighborhood.

The current ring under surveillance are a group of pro-Merana supporters known as Mera Masha. They strongly believe that Merana is destined to overtake all the lands of Subeta and turn the entire planet into a glorious underwater world. They are mostly just harmless hydrus pets fooling around on the internet but a few truly believe causing major upset to Subeta's waterways will bring about the changes they seek.

She mingles with the crowd, easily picking up on - and inserting herself into - whatever conversation she happens to stumble upon. She's very knowledgeable but also knows when to be a good listener. Sometimes you learn the most by knowing when not to talk.

It's how she hears the rumors of the plot to flood Shinwa's temple using the brute strength of a dozen battle-trained tutanis-for-hire.

"I heard it from my cousin. He didn't know the exact date but it's totally going down between the half and full moons."

"Dude, that's epic. He must be a hard-core Masha."

"Yeah. He's been different ever since he got Merana's blessing. I mean, he always loved Delphi Beach but now he's all about water over land. I don't know. I think it's all just talk but sometimes..."

He trailed off, staring into the distance. Carina had to work carefully, waiting until the conversation had moved on to a more innocent topic before introducing herself to the swampie with the interesting cousin. He was flattered that such a beautiful popoko in a custom designer gown would even descend from among the rich and popular to talk to the likes of him. After all, he was just a drink waiter.

She brought the conversation to Mera Masha so casually, her targets never even suspected her of a motive. Over the course of the evening, the swampie had helped narrow her list of potential suspects to six - two party attendants and four at large.

Her handler was beyond happy with the information she provided.

"I don't know how you do it, Carina, but you're well worth the pretty penny we pay you."

She smiled graciously and said nothing. All she could think about was casting aside the costume of the evening and settling into a nice, hot bubble bath.

Her house was all decorative glass panels and soft earth tones. Laia, her Candy Kitten minion, rushed over to greet her the moment she walked through the door. She felt bad for leaving her beloved minion home alone but she simply could not bear the thought of putting Laia at risk, should an operation ever go south.

Soft light, soothing music and the sweet scent of lavender vanilla allowed her to set aside the events of the day and settle into a state of total relaxation. Her voice rose softly, coming up with lyrics to match the reedy cries of the violin. This was her own private ritual, this singing of nonsense at the end of a long day. It kept her vocal chords in working order and allowed her to escape into the sound of her own voice, floating in a place where the threat of war and misery never dared to intrude.
