Personally I was more fond of the older version, since I always figured it was cute. Not that this one isn't, but it's just not the same anymore.

Much better than the original, but the face seems a little off and the dark red area on its back kind of looks like a shell-covering of some kind. The small wings, while quite cute, don't seem as fitting as the larger ones did.

I do, however, that you make the wings big and majestic (or somewhat) like the old one had. When I saw this on the news page, I thought it was a revamped chibi version, or something. Those wings are cute, but not ideal for a big-version of the pet, in my opinion.

Definitely an improvement, but the only think I liked on the old one was the BIG WINGS and I wish this one still had big wings. The little ones don't look cute, they just look sort of stupid. That's my only suggestion--bigger wings. Otherwise, excellent revamp. <img src="http://images.subeta.net/smilies/6398_emoticon_grin.gif" border="0" />

I'll agree %100 that the hipposaru is in desperate need of a revamp. However, while the art here is certainly closer to subetas quality standards, I have so many problems with the revamp
I voted for the old one. It isn't great, but this new one just doesn't keep to the spirit of the hipposaru - the old one OR the original one.
- How is that creature standing like that? He looks like he'll be flat on the floor any minute now. The body definitely needs more support.
- Wings that size are useless. It does more closely match the original, but it's just not practical for a clearly heavy creature to have tiny wings. They'll look cute on a chibi even if they aren't proportional - little pets can grow into their wings. The bird style wings may not be the original, but they are an improvement, which is the point of a revamp.
- That looks nothing like a hippo. It's not exactly fair to defend the wings as original and then take away from the hippo look - which seems to be the main idea of the HIPPOsaru pet. If you widen the snout and make the nostrils more prominent, that'd make a huge difference. As it is now, those teeth look too big for it's face. I also don't see why the ears are so thick.
- That dark spot on the back...what is that? Either get rid of it, or extend it up over the head. As it is, it looks like he was rolling in mud. Or maybe is developing some kind of shell? No idea.
- The spots...they are definitely pretty, but they don't really look natural. I like the idea of some dark spots, as suggested earlier. Looks much better.

Yeah......I really really don't like this revamp. A lot. It looks kind of dragony to me. The wings are way to small. The ears are too pulled back. Suddenly it needs spotted stripes? Its eyes are muddy and the tail appears huge.
Don't get me wrong, I appreciate the work that went into it. It's not a bad looking creature, but as a revamp for the current hipposaru, not so much. Yes it needs an update, but not a total make over.

Overall, I like this version a lot better than the old one (which, yes, totally needed an update. Much better thumbs up) But... I don't know. I can't put my finger on it, but something about the pose is bugging me. The legs seem a little... awkward.
And... is it supposed to be able to fly? XD I'm asking honestly, because I think the wings are beautifully drawn, just not anatomically feasible for a flying creature.

Hipposarus were the pet I hated getting by the zapper, because it was one of the two pets (Other one being a pet that is actually quite popular, so that may be my tastes playing)

I like the new one :S There's maybe some tiny less realist things about it, like people said the ears... But I like them that way. The pets on this site aren't supposed to look completely like real animals. Sooo, really, I think this is fine.

I prefer the old one, over the new, because of a few things (certainly not because the hopposaru doesn’t need a revamp, because it probably does, but.)

I just wanted to point out to those of you who think it could be skinnier and less chubby, the hippo, which this pet is based off of, is not a skinny animal. The chubbiness really is supposed to be there if the artist was trying to keep it looking like an actual hippo. If it were skinner, it would look very awkward. o_o;
I do agree that the wings should have been kept the same; chibi wings should stay with chibi pets. But I'm not too disappointed by it. I still think this revamp looks excellent! And I love the tribal markings that were added.

O.o I also just noticed when looking at it, but the farthest front leg from the viewer is too long and comes forward too far, it would not be able to support the little butter-ball body if it were really running. If it was moved a tiny bit in, especially the shoulder and elbow, it would look more convincing.

Okay, first off, I fixed the leg and pulled the paw/foot back a tiny bit to make it look like it's giving the body more support. Changed the eye color just a tiny bit, but to me it pops more. Got rid of the wings, and since I scrapped the wings didn't mess with the tail or add any feathers. Erased the black line from the 'scab' so now it look more like just a spot, and smoothed it and extended it just the tiniest bit onto the base of the tail. Added a line to the shoulder of the foremost front leg to make it appear like it goes into a shoulder and doesn't just start at the bottom of the chest. Also slimmed him down just the tiniest bit and made him a tiny bit longer, bleh bleh bleh and so forth.
And that's all for this episode of Pimp-my-Hippo (I wonder if anyone actually reads these comments, or if they are just ignored...just wondering...)

Definite 100% improvement! Just those darn ears...a tad toooo thick and laid back (like bat's ears), which gives the face an almost vampiric look when combined with the front teeth. Just a bit of a tweak to thin them out, add depth/hollowing and bring them a bit more forward like the older version. Apart from that, awesome coloring, adorable wings (older version was overbalanced by the huge wings) and a super tail. <img src="http://images.subeta.net/smilies/6398_emoticon_smile.gif" border="0" />
Oh, and may I also add to my previous post? Those ears. The length is fine, but I'm not to fond of the pointy-ness. I think they should be a bit more rounded. I read some more comments, and saw the <strong>ORIGINAL</strong> Original, and if we keep the chibi wings, my "constructive criticism" would be to make the face look a little less chibi also. The whole thing looks like a detailed chibi <img src="http://images.subeta.net/smilies/6398_emoticon_sad.gif" border="0" /> I LOL'ed and LOVE the original art though, so I am considering overlaying with that. Haha. <br/>

Oh and the right front leg, it should be placed a few inches further back. It is not possible without the Hipposaru sliding too forward and landing on it's belly. Plus, the lines seem to become lost right where the chest meets up with the right front leg and neck.

I did neglect to add anything other than they quick five-minute leg readjustment I did, since I was at the end of my lunch hour and had to get back to work. XD

It wouldn't be an unprecidented move - after all, the Rreign gained wings in the last re-draw! We do have lots and lots of pets with wings. Maybe these could be a different kind? Like transparent insect wings or the like, instead. It could be cute.

- The mouth seems too small, and so this revamp seems to resemble a Hippo less compared to other, older Hipposura's I've seen.
- The ears some how looks a little... off? idk... there's just something about them that bugs me.
- I kind of like AlkseeyaKC's markings better as they seem more natural and suit the Hipposaru better IMO. But I guess I can live with these markings.
- The wing? I have kind of mixed feelings about them. I like the fact they are paying more attention to the original artist's work by giving them "chibi" wings, but they seem a little small and I think I liked the bigger wings better.

I think a number of people commenting don't really understand the meaning of 'constructive criticism'. Even with the recent free gift item. It'd be nice to see subeta members being more considerate of each other and the fact there is a real person behind every screen name. Try to remember the artists are doing this for everyone's benefit and offering helpful advice is better than being nasty.

While the Hipposaru needed an update, this is just...Scary to look at.
First, I must say the spots and pattern reminds me of an experiment or alien pet. I know the artist is trying to make them look unique, but I don't think spots are the way to go. I mean, don't we have enough pets with spots or a spotty look? The next thing that really bothers me is the anatomy. It just...the left front leg doesn't look natural. It should be turned more and raised a bit higher if it's supposed to be leaping. I personally think the buck teeth should be taken out or be more hidden, cause they look flat and pasted on to the smile. The ears are okay. I think maybe if they were a bit smaller and not so triangular, but a bit more round, like the old one. And the wings should be bigger in my opinion. I think the old wings size was perfect. He is adorable. Like other people said I do think he's alittle to fat and I don't really like the size of the wings,but overall a BIG improvement. I do really like this revamp, the colors pop, it looks more solid, the shading is gorgeous, and I absolutely adore the feet, but I do have some nitpicks.
I love the designs, don't change them, they add wonderful creative flair to the previously drab little creature. The eyes have great expression, though I think another green might have been a better color choice, as the olive just doesn't pop enough.
Anyway, that's enough critiquing for me :3 Hope it helps anyway.
- The body is too short and fat, it pretty much looks like a butterball with legs, skinny-ish, long legs that are way out of proportion to it's fat body. If the torso was to be lengthened just a tiny bit, I think it would definitely help the whole composition and it would make it appear less fat.
- The ears are bigger than the wings and it makes it look a little funny. I believe the wings should be either made bigger or scrapped completely. I like cute little wings most of the time, don't get me wrong, but when you slap those cute tiny wings on this fat little hippo-esque body, it looks kind of stupid, like it's trying too hard to be super kawaii cute, when it could be cute with or without the wings. In my opinion the new version would be cuter without, as the wings detract from the rest of the pic because of their color, all that negative space white really stands out, especially when countered with the dark red back and the red of the rest of the body. It takes away from what might really be a gorgeous picture, but we'd never know it, because our initial focus would be on those tiny, ridiculous looking wings. (I say ridiculous not because they look bad, but because they look misplaced on the hippo's otherwise sleek, feather free body)
- I kind of wish the hippo had more feathers, even if it were to just make the tail tufty look a bit more feather-like. All the feathers on a birds body are designed by nature for a specific purpose, most of them to aid in flight. So the fact that the hippo is otherwise completely featherless except for the wings bugs me. To me it makes the wings stand out even more, as if someone had come along and just glued some cosplay wings onto some poor, defenseless (though styling and retro) hippo.
- The tiny indent on the darker back color where the wings meets the line between the lighter and the darker red bugs me and speaks of an inconsistency in lines, and the black line looks unnatural and kind of puts me in the mind of a giant scab on the hippo's back. I think the indent should be smoothed so that the dark red back is a smoother oval, and that the black line should be taken out so that there is a more natural transition between the dark to light colors.

Cute, Hipposaru did need an update. I would really like larger wings, though. And maybe the ears could face forward some more? The jeweled idea is nifty, though!

However, if you were to change anything, I would like to see the strip on his back to go to his face...I think it does bring out those awesome markings more.
The original one is landing on his front feet and this one's twisting while landing on one foot while his back feet are doing... I don't even know what. This is not a step forward. Also I hate the spread out toes on the front. It shouldn't have toes like that. Bleh.
Well, first off, the art itself is gorgeous, but I believe I'm going to vote for the older version. The body, for the most part, looks fine. I think the right front leg should be placed further back because of the way it's turning, and I'm not very fond of those markings, either. ^^; I agree with several other people in that the wings should be big and fluffy, and although the ears seem to be the right SIZE, the shape makes it look more like a cat, fox, or dog. Maybe move them forward a bit, and make them less...pointed, I guess? xD Eh...sorry if that doesn't make much sense.
It's adorable, a great improvement, but I would like to see the wings bigger. I do love wings tho, but for such a pet, his seem a little small. I like was Tiki suggested, or what he has but bigger.

I'd be happy if this revamp went through as-is, but I also like some of the alterations suggested in this thread (especially SilvyrWing's pose adjustment and some of the comments about widening the face and extending the dark stripe on the back).

I guess to put the proportions into perspective: the EARS are currently bigger than the WINGS. I think that is why it bothers me.

WOW...well first off- I'm slightly upset. It's lost its "hippo-ness" in my opinion. Don't get me wrong, it s gorgeous artwork but I'd like to see the muszzle wider, the back mark gone, bird wings returned, and the red skin a little more light. Other than that it looks dandy.
I'm all up for a revamp on the species but I'd have to get rid of my hipposaru if this one were to replace it.
Also- the ears are pointy. I think they should be more scooped.

I do like the new version WAY better than the old one, but I liked the feathery wings of the old one better than the chibi wings. I think if you're going to stick with the chibi wings, they should at least be larger.
I have to agree with Stijn. This thing is not a HIPPO anymore. I really like the current one we have now and I think it just needs an update on the artwork, not something completely different. :/
If the original wings were chibi wings I'm ok with that, maybe make these a tad bigger and a little more wing like (take out the anime @ curl at the bottom of the wing)
Over all this is a really well planned re-vamp and I like it a lot. Hippos are some of my favorite animals IRL and this revamp just makes this pet look so lively and fun.
