The Legend of the Rewrite
I think the word "rewrite" has become something of a myth on Subeta... whispered in back alleys of the forums, mentioned in the shoutbox and followed by eerie silence... there's probably even some religious cults that secretly worship and pray that one day, Rewrite will descend from the heavens and transform Subeta as we know it. But does it really exist?
I'm alx, the main programmer for Subeta, and I wanted to talk a bit about the "rewrite"... what it is (and isn't), why it exists (yes, it does exist!), and what's going on with it.
A few months after I started working on Subeta, it was decided that a complete re-do of the site was necessary. I mean a redo from a programming perspective, as in a do-over of the code that creates Subeta. The old code is complicated, buggy, and slow. It needs to be replaced with faster, better designed code. Think of this as replacing the engine in an old car... the outside still looks the same, but the inner workings are all different. It was decided that we would continue maintaining the old site, but devote most of our time to the creation of a parallel rewritten Subeta, that would mimic the look and feel of the old site, but be all shiny and new under the hood.
Unfortunately, it didn't go all according to plan. Maintaining the current site turned out to be a bigger task than anticipated, and bugs went unfixed as work on the rewrite progressed. As time passed, the users (that's you guys) probably felt that we'd abandoned the site entirely, since nothing was changing. We thought we could fix that by letting you all see the new rewrite site and play with it, but still, it was for testing purposes only... nothing you did there really counted on Subeta proper.
So that's how the rewrite came to be. Currently "the rewrite" exists as a chunk of source code (a pretty big chunk -- 44,000 lines of code). Together with a database and web servers, this code creates a Subeta site that's half complete... it has forums, wardrobe, smail, some pet functionality, etc, but some stuff doesn't work yet. Okay, a lot of stuff doesn't work yet ;) It'd take a substantial amount of work still to bring this code up to the point where it could replace Subeta. And even then, it'd be an all-at-once change from old site to new site, which might annoy some people who are used to things currently.
Now, more than a year since the rewrite project began, we sat down and evaluated what we've done so far, and decided to change our strategy. To put it bluntly, we're abandoning the idea of creating a separate rewrite that will eventually "take over" for the current Subeta.
Instead, we're going to go about the rewrite of the site gradually, by rewriting specific features at a time. Basically, the rewritten features will share no code with the old Subeta site, but they'll still be a part of that site (if that makes sense). That means they'll be on subeta.net and you'll be able to use them normally (they'll be "live"), but they'll be backed by newer, better, less buggy code. As we work, more features will be rewritten against the new code, all on live subeta for you to use. This way, Subeta will gradually improve and accumulate bug-fixes, but it'll be in a way that lets you guys get the benefits of the improvements now, rather than waiting months for the rewrite to launch.
But wait... what about all that work we did, those 44,000 lines of rewrite code? Was all that time spent ignoring the live Subeta and working on the old rewrite wasted? No, not at all. Those 44,000 lines of rewritten code contain numerous ideas and improvements and new features that will be integrated directly into our in-place rewrite (I'm going to call this "new" rewrite a recode from now on, to avoid confusion. Make sure you all start using that word, so I can feel popular for coining the phrase.) So nothing we've done so far will really be a waste :)
I hope this cleared up some confusion/rumors/myths about the rewrite! If you have any questions, feel free to post in the comments, and I'll try to answer whenever I'm around.
-Alex, Subeta Programmer
You may have noticed little +'s hiding next to items around the site ;) If you click on this, it will automatically add the item to your wishlist. Right now this is in
testing, and will be made to be less intrusive over the next day or so.
The
wishlists page itself has had a few changes, including being able to mass remove wishlist items now :) (And search shops!)
Update: If you click on the + now, it'll automatically update your wishlist. No more getting redirected! And the + only shows up after you mouse over it :)
Note: If you aren't seeing any blue borders, or +'s around the items, make sure to do a hard refresh. This is usually done by holding control and F5 :) (or command+shift+R ;))
Introducing a cool new feature! When viewing an item in
trades,
user shops, or anywhere that items have the mouse-over text, if the item is on your wishlist, it'll have a tiny blue border around it.
(I assume that
Prince is on a lot of wishlists, so it's a good example. Try it out! ;))
The
Blackheart Hollow has found some of its older items locked away in storage! Race you to the Shinigami! ;)

Are you
Royalty? If so, you should have no problem finding this new achievement! ;)
Thank You for celebrating our fourth anniversary with us! We hit some pretty high user online counts (1,300!) which wouldn't be possible without all the referrals and help you've all been doing :)!
The bags have been retired, and no longer appear around the site. I hope that you got all the items you wanted :)!
New Human Avatar Layering Guidelines!
Artists: There is a
new post in the Art Reference forum detailing new guidelines and definitions for our HA layers. Please make sure you read it as soon as possible. User not found: dna and I are open to your feedback, so feel free to post!
AAs and Admins: If all item-adding staff can familiarize themselves with these guidelines and make sure to double check/change items already uploaded to artist directories before adding them to the site, it would be a great help to getting us started on the right foot. Your extra effort in this matter is appreciated.
User Admins: I am going to start moving items to different layers as soon as possible so you may see an influx of tickets claiming wardrobe items are missing. Use the Staff Item Search to look up the item and check its layer assignment. Ask users to verify their item is not on that layer before escalating the ticket to me. Thanks!

This year's
Keelholiday has come to a close, and the mysterious pirate ship in the Victus Sea has disappeared, for now (some report seeing it heading toward the Uncharted Island, though successive searches have found nothing). As the moon shines silently on the calming sea, a strange new weapon seems to have appeared in the
Millionaire Center, without anyone noticing how it got there.
We hope you all had a happy

AVAST!
For many years, the horizon on the Victus Sea was clear and bright, untainted by any foreboding outline on its waves. But with the official Subetan acknowledgment and celebration of
Keelholiday this year, an ominous ship has suddenly appeared, as if waiting, and cast its black shadow over the ocean . . .
The rumors flying through the air whisper of a band of bloodthirsty pirates, led by a merciless captain. The tension and anxiety this vessel has brought with its arrival has led several investigative ships, armed to the teeth, to approach it, but their crews returned panicking--
"A chill wind began to blow, and the waves became choppy . . . we couldn't get any closer than a few hundred yards . . . "
"Our engine stopped. Just stopped! We have the best ship in Subeta, it's impossible!"
"It disappeared! The ship just vanished!"For now, it seems, we can only wait and see what this strange new ship will do, or if it will leave us in peace at the end of
Keelholiday. Meanwhile, we'll keep our celebration onshore--arrr, mateys, look at all the
booty we be findin'!

Back from limbo, the Cursed Aerie returns to seek vengeance on those who harmed it before! Take on its challenge in the
Battle Coliseum!
Yarrr! Some new colored pirate bandanas can be found stocking
at the
Accessory Bin! ;)
Just so everyone is aware, the goodie bags
are still being found around the site, and they will be up for more than just today! :D
Sebastian Phoenix would like to wish you all a very, very happy
Fourth Anniversary! Today marks the day that we have been operating (
in our current state) for four years!
It's been fun, exciting, and we keep growing and expanding. The entire staff just wanted to take a second to thank you all for playing, and enjoying what we all work so hard on. It's really exciting to know that you're
part of something like this.

Once again - Thank you for playing Subeta. It really makes it worth it for all of us. :)

There are two new special achievements. ;)

Many moons have passed since the Vampire Kumos once reigned over the marshes of Shadowglen. However, after nearly 4 years of hiding, the Vampire Kumos known as
Eclipse haunts the nights of the Shadowglen Graveyard once again!

The
Malevolent Grenade and
Feather Duster have found their way back to Subeta's existence by way of the
Crystal Shop! :D

Can you find these two new achievements? ;)
Hey everyone! This is to let you know about upcoming downtime tomorrow (Tuesday) morning at 4 am, Subeta time. We need to take the site down for approximately an hour or less (hopefully less!) while we re-synchronize our 2 database servers (gosh, we do seem to have to do this often, don't we?)
Anyway, just wanted to let you all know what's going on. The downtime window is based on when our graphs tell us that the least users are online. If you do happen to use the site during this particular window, please be patient with us while we continue to improve the site.
Also, you may have noticed Subeta suffered a very unannounced outage this morning. This was due to an issue with a network switch that connects all of our servers. The switch was beaten back into submission, though, and it's once again happily switching away.
I guess Sagittarius was willing to hand over a few more Lucents for the
Token Shop! :o
On a roll, the
Token Shop has released a few other old favorites. ;)

The
Shrine of Wokam seems to have appeared in the
Token Shop! :o

Today we are introducing the
Achievement system. Those of you who were around three years ago will remember the
secret avatars - this is similar.
These will be for doing small tasks; some will be hard, and some will be easy to find. Right now, you can choose to display one along with your Human Avatar on the forums, however that is the only place on the site where it is displayed right now. ;)
Good luck, and have fun finding all of them! Of course, we will keep adding to them in the future. :)
Sougara has a new line out, the
Yellowjack! Anyone whos anyone will head over
to
Subeautique right now for this high-end (and expensive) fashion. :D
No bees or yellow jackets were harmed in the process of making this line. ;)
It's almost that time of year again. ;) And the
Token Shop is getting prepared with a new batch of
Graveyard Potions!

In the spirit of
Journal updates, you can now change your preferences on getting events
here.
Another feature, would be the
Bad Word Filter which is enabled by default. If you aren't offended by harsher language, feel free to disable the filter. We respect the free speech of users, and will only be enforcing
filter evasion from this point forward. :)
For those of you who are more sensitive and keep your filters enabled, feel free to report any naughty words or bad word filter evasions that slip through (via the ticket center) so that we can keep our list as up-to-date as possible to protect delicate eyeballs and minds. :)
Also, it is still not appropriate to direct bad words at another user or to spam -- with bad words or otherwise -- so please abstain from those activities. Thank you!
Bring back the good ol' days with this
free rocking horse. :D
Journals have been given a few improvements recently (like, they actually work now! :P), and the 'default' layout has been updated. All previous layouts had to be removed (because most of them didn't work), so you have to visit the
journal page to have yours reset to the new one. ;)There are more improvements in store for the journals; right now, it's good that they just work, though. ;)

referring your friends to Subeta?
Well now, for each referral, you actually get a prize :o! Right now there isn't a list of these prizes on site, but there will be soon. However, the prizes
should start being handed out for referrals you've already completed.
If you want these prizes for yourself, make sure to start referring! Get your friends to join! Put

There have been reports of people finding Shrines to the goddess
Apollonia in the
Coda Caves...

Amongst the carnage and gel throughout the land of Subeta, a strange creature has appeared in cave on the shores of Darkside. I wonder what it's protecting? Only one way to find out...
Feel naked with the passing of Underwear Day's fabulous underpants? No? Just hungry, you say? You're in luck, because
Home Appliances has brand new place setting sets just for you, you slob!
(Nah, you're not really a slob. You really need to work on your etiquette, though. We can't take you out in public. :()
Oh no! I really,
really hope you guys stocked up on underwear, because otherwise you'll be going commando . . . all underwear from Underwear Day has been retired!
Hello all! It's me again :P
We will be taking the site down on Monday (the 8th) at 6 AM Subeta time for some database server work (we need to synchronize our backup database server with the primary one). Depending on how fast the servers decide to do this for me, downtime could be anywhere from 20 minutes to 45 minutes or so. This will make the site more stable only (it won't fix any bugs or anything.)
Like before, the 6 am timeslot is when we have the least users on the site, so hopefully this won't be an inconvenience for most of you. If it is, thank you so much for your patience while we continue improving Subeta!
Want to look super sharp? ;)
Then head on over to the
Token Shop. :D

The Final Wave
The poor thing just doesn't know when to quit. Could this be the end of the Hydragellos...finally? Only one thing is for certain. POUND IT TO THE GROUND!
Some suspicious activity has arisen in The Darkside. Could this be related to the phoenix-like Hydragellos? Who knows? :o

Item not found: nukum shrineThe power of the gods and goddesses are in your reach. If you are lucky, and the gods smile on you, it could turn the entire tide of a

The Misfit Minions Society United (an EXTREMELY WELL-KNOWN group, they
remind you, thanks very much, and if you haven't heard of them you clearly
ignore everything but your own toes, shame on you because it OBVIOUSLY
wasn't just created by a few disgruntled minions ten minutes ago) has endorsed
these five minions with their Misfit Mark of Approval, and they are now available
for purchase at the
Minion Market! . . . Provided they'll be
appreciated for the unique creatures they are.
Still in denial that summer hasn't left you yet? Then show your off your

Is this the last straw for the Hydragellos? Last time it was slayed 4 times...and it's already coming back for more. I'm beginning to believe there is something controlling these titans. Anyway, let's smash them together!

Emerging from the bloodied gel remains of its children...the
Hydragellos appears! The world of Subeta is being attacked and it's your job to defend it!
...although, something is a little funny about this one...wait, t--

It seems the good ol' Gelatin Golem has decided to return to Subeta. I wonder who's commanding the gelatin forces? :o
Also the Mini Gelatins and Gelatin Gliders have made a brief comeback.
UPDATE: A large familiar shadow begins to tower over the Gelatin Golem.
The
Mysterious Costume Trunk has been getting heavy recently, and it's time to take a couple pieces of clothing out of it ;)
6 of the Costume Trunk sets have been retired :o!

So, um, WE'RE BACK!Tired of having to deal with all those strong opponents recently? Try your luck on a new batch of fresh of
Gelatin. However, if you're unlucky, they'll make fresh meals out of your pets. :x
UPDATE: It seems the Gelatin Gliders have decided to join in on the fun, as well. Smash 'em!
A NEW CHALLENGER HAS APPEARED...Seriously, though. Run for your lives! We poked it one too many times with a Pokey Stick and now she's roaming the
Arctic Frost looking for some fresh meat.
Prodigy, one of the smartest beings on Subeta, has found its way into the
Battle Coliseum. Can you beat it?
