Charms: Update!




Just wanted to give everyone a quick update on the order of charms that we placed earlier this month. The order is currently being manufactured, and as soon as we have a shipping date, we will update you. We apologize for the delay - we know a lot of you were hoping to have them for the holidays - but as this is a new product and process for us, we\'re still trying to work out the kinks in the ordering and manufacturing process. You guys ordered a lot of charms! :)



When we DO receive the order, they\'ll ship standard USPS mail from Chicago, Illinois. I promise you keep you updated as to their status. Thanks!

There are some big changes coming to custom wearables, and if you already have an item approved on-site, these changed may affect you directly! Please read the following information carefully!



We would like to thank you all for the incredible response to our new Custom Items feature. As a staff, we spent a lot of time on the back end of this project trying to decide how it could best suit our site and our users. We wanted to empower our users to contribute their creative energy and ideas to wearables, while still maintaining our high artistic standards that so many people love and appreciate about Subeta.



Therefore, we knew that the first few weeks of Custom Items would be a learning process for everyone. We love the way the Custom Wearables Forum has taken off and the help and advice users are offering each other for getting their items approved and improving their submissions. We love the idea of “shops” for your items and can’t wait to see that continue to develop as time goes on. And, we LOVE the quality and creativity of the vast majority of items that we approve for use on-site.



That being said, this process hasn’t been without its bumps in the road! Over the past few weeks, our staff has been working extremely hard on the back end of this project. We knew almost immediately that we needed to improve our standards for quality and guidelines for submission to make things easier on both the users submitting art, and the support staff who are approving or denying it. We want to make our standards as clear as possible for everyone involved, so that if we deny your item, you know exactly why, and exactly what you need to do to improve it and submit it again, should you choose to do so.



The largest point of discussion on this custom items project has been, by far, the accepting of artwork (items or wearable overlays) that depicts copyrighted material. Upon first launch, we honestly did not know how we wanted to handle “fandom” items or copyrighted artwork. We briefly considered allowing all submissions that met our standards of quality - original material or not - and then dealing with the consequences from copyright owners should they ask us to remove that material from our site. However, we learned pretty quickly that this was completely unfair to the users who paid for these items - how disappointing would it be if you logged in one day, and your fantastic custom item that you paid Cash Shop Credits for had just disappeared, or had been completely redrawn without your knowledge? Yes, it’s fun to accurately depict your favorite characters, movies, books, etc., but as our artists can tell you, it’s no fun seeing your hard work copied, traced, or used without your permission.



So, we decided that accepting copyrighted material is a road that we are going to choose not to go down. And yes, we realize we have not been perfect about this ourselves in the past, but we are going to take the time NOW to make the changes to set ourselves back on the right road for the future - the right road being that of original artwork, high standards for quality, and finding unique ways to pay tribute to our favorite “real life” items as opposed to simply copying them.



Blah, blah, blah, Carol - what does this mean for me? For most of you, it means taking some time to carefully read through the Rules and Guidelines for Custom Wearables. This page has been updated, and will always stay updated with the latest guidelines for your submissions. As of the writing of this announcement, this page has been gone over with a fine-toothed comb in order to give you most well-defined instructions we can offer. As always, you can feel free to ask for rule clarifications or help in the appropriate forum.



For very few of you, this means that the item that you submitted, while it may have been approved in the past, does not meet our newly set standards for quality or originality. We had some very long discussions about how to handle this. We didn’t want to simply delete the items from the site (that would create a giant mess) or refund the original submitter their CSC (as many of the items have changed hands several times by now), so we have come up with a solution that we hope will be acceptable for those of you who will be affected by this change. So, if your existing item is designated by our staff as an item that needs to be edited in order to reflect our newly set standards for quality or originality, the original submitter of the item will be contacted by a Subeta staff artist who will be redrawing the item for you in order to bring it up to standard. You will have the opportunity to give that artist a special request you may have about the redrawing of the item, and at that point, the item will be redrawn and changed in all instances on the site by January 7th, 2012.



This is a one-time only deal, and we’re only doing it because of these very special circumstances. We realized that not having enough definition to our rules and standards is our fault, we apologize for the inconsistencies, and we want to do what we can to make it right to those of you who may be affected. Going forward, our staff is going to be much better educated about what is acceptable, and what is not, and our goal is to be consistent with our approval process to make it easier on everyone.



Please use this thread to ask any questions you might have. If you have an approved custom item on site right now, please DO NOT create a ticket asking if your item is one of those set to be revamped. If it is, you will be contacted in a timely manner by our staff, and everyone else can assume their item is “up to par”. Again, this is a very limited number of items, which is why we are choosing to take these measures now as opposed to letting things get further out of control.



We really think that this solution, while not perfect, is the best thing to do for everyone involved. We sincerely thank you for sticking with us through all the changes (here and otherwise!), and please know that we are always looking to improve the site for you, because you’re what keeps us here!

New Feature: Live Events!
I am proud to announce a brand new feature updating our event system: Instant event notifications.



Your events tab on the left hand side of the layout now has an event "counter" bubble with a number amount of events you have, and when you receive a new event, the counter will update automatically without having to refresh the page. These updates are LIVE!



Along with this, a larger speech bubble giving you the alert will popup at the left corner of your screen. See a preview below:

This feature is experimental and we realize that bugs will come out of this. Please report all bugs for this in the Problems & Bugs Forum.



If you are having problems with this new event feature, please try and clear your browser's cache (ie: CTRL + F5)



Note from Keith: Make sure to take a look at your sidebar preferences! You might be able to change to 'Dashboard' because of this ;)



Updated Note: Sometimes the event dispatcher will not notice you are online, and therefore not send you a live notification bubble. It does this when you are in between page loads. So, if you get an event when you are in between page loads, you will not get the bubble. However, you will get the event on your next page in your events tab similar to the old system.

Hi everyone! We usually refrain from posting anything political or US-based on the site, but this is an important one. Right now in the US we are debating a bill called SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act). This bill would give the government sweeping power to shut down websites that appear to be breaking any copyright.



An example of this would be if a user on Subeta posted a copyright picture, video, or song in the forums, the entire site of Subeta could be shut down until that issue is resolved. Right now, we are simply contacted by the owner and asked to remove the offending post, item, in a way that doesn't impact the rest of the users on Subeta.



Some of my favorite websites (TUMBLR!!!) have already said it would be impossible for them to run under the rules that SOPA sets up, and would most likely have to be shut down or entirely change their services.



Here is an excellent article from Lifehacker that tells you exactly what SOPA is, and what it will do to the sites that you visit daily. here is a site with petitions and other information that will help you contact the appropriate people, should you feel so inclined.



Anyway, thanks for reading! Like I said, I wouldn't post this here if it didn't directly have an impact on the way that we run Subeta, and on the way that the other sites that you visit would also have to change. As always, I suggest you read the bill yourself so you can make an educated choice on how you feel about what it does.

I just want to make a quick note, since I know a lot of you are confused that these are being denied now!



We are working on a plan (it's a really good plan, I promise!) going forward with these, that I hope to have up in a few days time.



We spent a lot of time preparing for Custom Items. We announced it, looked at all of the user feedback and crafted what we thought was a perfect system....



And then we unleashed it and quickly saw that it was far from a perfect system, but it gave us a set of guidelines and boundaries that we can use going forward.



I know that a lot of you pointed to my companion cube as a weird sort of exception to what we've been denying for the past few days, and I totally agree. I've taken it off my avatar, and it's actually going to be used on the page once we've updated it as an example of what not to do with your custom items, along with further instructions on how to make a proper item.



I hope to have these new guidelines up in a few days after some more intense discussions with the artists and UAs who help craft this soft of thing, but just wanted to toss out a quick update in regards to what we've been seeing so far :)!

We're going to have another meetup at Downtown Disney, but in Orlando this time! Hosted by myself and my lovely MM co-host Mekiko :D



This meetup will be held on Saturday, March 3, 2012 (almost three months from now so you have plenty of time to save up or plan or do whatever it is you need to do for the trip! ;)) at 1:00 pm and will last until around 5:00 at the latest. A place to meet is TBD, but will be posted here and on the Facebook event page no less than a week before the meetup takes place.



Just like at Disneyland, there is no charge to get into Downtown Disney in Orlando, either. And parking is free if you're driving!



So come hang out with us at the most magical place on earth (I guess technically that's supposed to be the Magic Kingdom but we'll be close enough!). You'll get an achievement and a Meetup Bag, and we might even have a game or a contest to play! :o



If you use Facebook, feel free to join the event I made so we can have some sort of idea of how many people are coming.



(I only kind of stole this idea from Keith; I was already planning the trip to Disney again! :P)

After such a success in London, we're having another meetup! Sorry for the late notice, but it'll be held at Downtown Disney in Anaheim, CA on December 10th starting at 1PM. The meetup will last no later than 5PM but we hope that you all stick around and enjoy Disney even after we've left. It'll be myself and Rah, so bring your site and art related questions for us to answer!



Just a note -- There is no charge to enter downtown disney, so you don't need to buy park tickets :)



We intend to hold another meetup in Northern California (around the bay area) soon, so don't worry about flying/driving/teleporting in if you live in that part of the state.



We'll be meeting at the front of Downtown Disney and can't wait to see all of you there! Remember that everyone who attends get a special achievement which comes with the Meetup Bag!
