New Server

Here we are! We are moved to the new servers :) Now the name of the game is moving quickly to ensure that we get rid of the lag, and get things working how they are supposed to. You may notice some glitches or bugs, but we are working hard to quickly fix them.



As I said when we were moving, the cool thing about these servers is that we now live "in the cloud". During this event for example if the site starts the lag, we can just create two new webservers to help balance the load. We've also got some awesome tools for watching the speed of the site which should allow us to really fine tune the site and get everything running in top shape.



Thank you for being patient, I know it took a bit longer than any of us expected to actually move. (User not found: grelca and I stayed up all night, it was crazy!)



Update: We're still working on this, I promise! We're making some important updates, but we have to make a change and then watch it for awhile to see if it's working or just using more resources.



Hopefully we will be bak up and running quickly very soon!

This is a reminder that the site will be going down in about half an hour (at 1:00 am) so we can do our work on the servers! We'll keep y'all updated via Facebook and Twitter (and the downtime page, but don't 100% rely on it staying up!). :)

Alright, so after the ... test run of last week, this wednesday morning at 1AMEST we will be taking the site down again to work on it.



This time we fully plan to move the site to the new servers. During the downtime we will have the facebook and twitter accounts updated with information as we go :).

Wow.. Sorry about that hiccup with the new quests! I guess that code, while working fine for testing where pretty much just I was using it, wasn't very well optimized for lots of people using it at once. :x



I've brought them back up and things should be smoother now (I disabled having multiple tasks per quest for now until I have a little more time on my hands and I'm not quite so exhausted). Going to keep an eye on it for a bit, though, and if it starts causing problems again I might have to take them down until tomorrow when I'll be better able to focus.



Edit: Ugggh, okay, yeah. I'm going to have to spend some more time with this tomorrow, that alone definitely didn't help. Sorryyyyy :(:(

Server Update

Alright, that did not go according to plan! We had some hardware issues (with our load balancer) that caused us to not be able to complete the move in the amount of time that we\'d have liked. If we\'d continued it was likely the site would be down until noon, or later!



Instead we have brought the site back up on our existing servers, and will continue to work on the new ones until we can attempt a transfer again.

Server Update

We've recovered from the server that we had last week (though were unable to retrieve any of the lost data :() and have put in extra measures to prevent anything happening like that in the future. We've also learned a ton during the process which will help us a lot in our...

Server move!

We're going to start a server move on Wednesday (April 20th) at 1AM. We expect that it'll take most of the night as there are a few steps we have to take.



- Backup our (massive) database, and then move it across the internet to our new server. This takes awhile.

- Import that database backup into our new server. For those of you tech geeks out there, this new server is a beast. With 36GB of RAM and 4x solid state drives, our database should be smooth!

- Move all of our files to the new web servers. This process has already been started and we expect it to be completed before tuesday rolls around.

- Move all our images to the new server. This is even larger than the database, and will take awhile to backup / move / unpack.



Now, for the cool stuff. We're moving Subeta to "the cloud". You might have heard that in commercials or from your banker or the guy who fixes your iPhone. What it means for you is that we'll have the amazing ability to just start up new web servers whenever the site starts to get under load. For example, during the Masquerade when it started to lag (or really any other event...) we can just click a button and start up a new webserver to help distribute the load. Once the event is over, we can disband that server. This makes it easy for us to scale the site (and much cheaper!) and keep it running fast for you guys.



We'll be updating the twitter and facebook page while we are working on the move to keep you updated!

I\'m sure everyone has noticed a few bugs around the site the past few days. Things aren\'t working properly in relation to time (like auto training, or gold accounts expiring, or quests resetting) or any other number of things.



What happened is our development server crashed. This is the server where all of our tools are kept (including all the files that run the cron which makes time tick on Subeta) as well as gives us (the programmers) the ability to edit the site while it\'s live.



The server essentially crashed and burned, one of the hard drives is completely unreachable and had to be replaced. Unfortunately, it took awhile to be replaced, and it meant that we have to do an entire OS reload on that server. We\'ve lost months of work (because our top secret projects are kept on that server, and off the other webservers) between all of the developers, as well as access to those tools I was talking about above.



We\'re going to be spending the weekend trying to get things working. There are two things that we are going to be doing.



1.



Priming our new hosting solution at Rackspace for a move soon. The type of hosting we have at Rackspace should prevent something like this from happening in the future. We\'re also now taking preventive measures to keep our code in multiple (safe!) places to ensure that we don\'t lose tons of work in the future.



We anticipate moving to Rackspace sometime in the next two weeks, which will mean (at most, hopefully!) a day of downtime. Once we are closer to that, I will fill you in on the exact date/time that we intend to switch.



2.



Getting our development server up and running on our existing hosting. Once we\'ve got this all worked out, we should have the cron running again, and be able to make changes to the site. Right now we can, it\'s just complicated and annoying.

SO FOR THE GOOD NEWS, RIGHT?!

We are going to be extending the Masquerade dancing until Monday. At that point, we should have firm control over the situation. And it gives you a few more days to collect those trinkets ;).

Pet Slot Update!

Exciting news, we've updated the way that pet slots work! Here are the changes that we've made:

* The limit when using the Mystical Donadak Plushie and Mystical Montre Plushie is still 20 pet slots. That means the initial 5 slots all users get, the 5 slots that you get from a gold account, and 10 through the plushies.

* You can now gain unlimited slots with the Loyalty Pet Slot Totem. Using the totem will no longer count toward the 'hard' limit imposed by the plushies, which means that you can use your totem any time and it not count toward the same limit as the mystical plushies!

* You either have 0, 1 or 2 free slots depending on how many slots you had prior to this change.

* Like always, you must have your gold account active to use extra slots!

Can you turn all the blue boxes to black? Test your skill in our new game, Blackout!
